Sudo Mesh is a volunteer organization building the People's Open
Network, a resilient community-owned and -operated non-profit Internet
infrastructure in Oakland.
Goals: In two years, most high-traffic public areas will have free
wifi, and 10% of low-income family households will have affordable
internet access. Workshops and internships will build local expertise
and create business opportunities. Sudo Mesh works to build community
at the local as well as the global level, working with a coalition of
open source mesh networking projects around the world [1].
History: Since January of 2013, Sudo Mesh has held weekly open meetings
and work sessions focused around researching, co-learning, software
development, and community outreach in the areas of wireless networking
and open source application development [2]. In July of 2013, Sudo Mesh
successfully crowdfunded $3,166 and 1.951511 bitcoins to purchase the
first round of 100 routers, antennae, and other necessary equipment to
bootstrap the network [3].
Model: Sudo Mesh is a federal non-profit public benefit corporation
fiscally sponsored by the bay area nonprofit Media Alliance. Currently,
income is generated through donations and grants, with future income to
come in the purchase of routers, services and equipment.
Current status: Testing our software in a developer launch [4],
building services and local applications to run on the mesh [5], and
awaiting results of a $500,000 Bay Area Impact Challenge Google grant
application [6].
