Awesome, congrats everyone, thanks Miguel for posting! We should really correct this since it makes it sound like we are putting all the nodes in known locations, etc: "While the project is still in the early stages, the group has been busy building the technological infrastructure, and is now entering the phase of setting up and testing each of the rooftop routers. Once in place, the routers will be able to provide free wireless Internet access to residents by connecting with a public Wi-Fi tower located in Richmond." // Matt p.s. <mini-rant> wtf, 22nd st is reasonably lit and that glass door is fairly new, less than a year old! The elevator could maybe be considered freight based on the size, but it has tile floors and proper full doors, so the term seems misleading. I get the idea of setting the tone and generating a motif, but it's also important to say that sudo, and sudo mesh as a project that uses sudo room, also aim to represent accessibility. In fact, a feature of our building is it's office-like nature. Thanks for the share, Miguel! and good catches all, Matt :-) That first paragraph is hilarious! So Stephenson-esque hacker-apocalypto! And otherwise it's a pretty decent piece of journalism - I like how he brings in Bruce to provide context on the state of the digital divide in Oakland, and doesn't make the mesh sound like a quick one-size-fits-all solution to it. Matt, did you also mention that Internet connectivity will also be donated by those with existing ISP subscriptions, so it doesn't sound like we have a single point of failure reliance on the IA's Richmond link? This is not the case, we are testing all the nodes to ensure they work, and also will be setting up a small number of them from just a few locations in Oakland as a test network before expanding. Secondly, another potential interpretation is that the mesh's internet connection will be provided specifically from Richmond, but this is not yet fully determined. We have some great opportunities to connect to networks in Richmond, but in actuality the network will likely be connected to the internet more locally first, and even this is not totally locked in exactly how internet connection will play out to begin. I left it ambiguous, that internet connections are not totally locked in, and clarified the Richmond connection is not necessarily the way the network will work, especially at first. We could also follow up to give our precise plan, but I figured if we didn't want to get the "hey ISPs" conversation out there, I'd just leave it out for the moment. No problem updating that though.
