Hey, all! Here's a quick update of the goings on at People's Open over the last
couple of months:
Matt went to Our Networks (
https://ournetworks.ca/) in Toronto
He brought back a super cool wifi spamming device! Ask him more about it.
Seth, Mai, and Juul tabled at Richmond's Spirit & Soul Festival
(
https://www.richmondmainstreet.org/spirit-soul-festival/)
They met people representing really cool orgs in Richmond including NIAD
(
http://niadart.org/) (Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development), and No Coal
in Richmond (
https://ncir.weebly.com/) (Richmond resident-activists fighting against the
handling of coal)
They tested out the new Mobile Citizen hotspots recently procured by Jenny
They met the mayor of Richmond!
Benny and Dig met up to renew each others' interest in developing the mesh monitor
(
https://peoplesopen.net/monitor)
Jackson planted the seeds for the long-awaited mesh services directory / browser. Watch
our progress in these (
https://github.com/sudomesh/services-registry-server) repos
(
https://github.com/sudomesh/services-registry-client/).
Tyler conducted a site-survey with an ORCA (
https://www.ww6or.com/) repeater trustee for a
new node location
Mai met with community members in People's Park who use the rechargeable hotspot set
up by Juul and Aidan earlier this year.
It sounds like Aidan might run for Berkeley mayor in 2020
(
https://ccc.gp.org/aidan-hill/)! Support this lovely and amazing human!
Marc, Mai, Fitz, and others in collaboration with Nico from APC (Association for
Progressive Communications) (
https://www.apc.org/) are reviving the disaster radio
(
https://disaster.radio/) project and beginning work on its next iteration
Eve and Benny coordinated a lovely and steep hike up the Claremont Canyon Fire Trail in
Berkeley
Jenny got a job that pays her to learn python! WOOT!
This October/November, look forward to updates on the above, plus:
jmg is planning to get his house on the mesh
We'll be raising money for the continued work on disaster radio. People getting paid
to do amazing work! Hooray!
Matt is going to Palestine, and Nico from APC is traveling all over the place (Mexico,
Peru, Tanzania, Germany, too many to list!) to communities that could benefit from a
working disaster radio.
Seth will work with Moni to design and print a banner for future tabling at this emergency
prep fair (
https://bdpnnetwork.org/event/community-based-dp-demofair-2019/) and beyond
Ryan and Benny will collaborate on people's open communications
It's going to be Halloween!
📡❤️
