Hi!
CSGSA (Computer Science Graduate Student Association @ Berkeley) got
some Amazon AWS credits for their students so I took $100 credit to use
for a VPN server for People's open network. I think it is good to see
how it works there because if we have an image for it we can easily
scale than VPNs all around the globe. But first we have to see if they
work and how they work and what are downsides. Credit is good until the
end of August.
Please somebody take this over and contact me for details. First step is
probably to prepare some way to easily deploy Tunneldigger VPN server
instances on Amazon.

Hi!
I am saying that we have $100 to spend on Amazon - why not? It is not
that we are giving them the money, they are giving it to us.
I think that more VPN servers we have, better it is. It is just one hop
among many anyway. We should not be trusting VPS provides anyway, if
this is what bothers you?

I am not sure where are you looking at costs? Micro instance is $0.025
per Hour, that is 4000 hours which is a bit more than 5 months.
$20 dollars per month seems expensive for you? Depending how they
behave, I would say.
Why not? What is wrong with Amazon?
I think, if look globally, for mesh networks in general, having a
turnkey solution is something which can help bootstrapping the networks.
They can move later on away from Amazon, but starting there I think is
an easy solution.

What are the bandwidth costs? From what I understand, that is the biggest cost with amazon
month over month.
Possible compromise: use the credit to develop/test an was image (Ami). Don't run a
production VPN hop on it.
So if folks have amazon already, they can utilize the ami.

Hi!
You should not trust any 3rd part service. :-) And you should build
technology to not require such trust.
So your argument is invalid. I see Amazon as a easy way for getting at
least something of the ground for new networks. It is far from perfect,
but it is better than nothing.

Hi!
Basing our decisions on irrational fear and prejudice does not help our
goals.
1.) If security of our network depends on the fact that nothing runs on
Amazon, then we are doing something wrong.
2.) To have a secure network for people, you have first to have a
network for people. And network for people does not mean 3 nodes between
crypto-experts, but thousands of nodes between people not knowing
anything about security. And you get thousands of nodes by making things
easy to use, spread, install, spawn new networks.
But I see that I am in minority on this, so will stop arguing.

Great stuff!
So ~$28 for around 10 days of active node, 100 GB per month, 300 KB/350
KB. This is a bit high in my opinion. :-)
I can get VPS for 40 EUR per month, 100 Mbit/s uncapped.
