Allo friends,
As you may or may not know, the deadline for Round 2 submissions is this
Friday!
A draft gDoc with the questions (which are much the same as Round 1) is
here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Bp0CYUSzWEVt3xMusEQjQRvuCiciBsW6-gqYRw1…
I think DisasterRadio has a really good shot. Here's a look at the Round 1
winners (some of which I'm genuinely shocked won anything):
* Project Lantern <http://lantern.works/docs/apps.html> - first place - has
amazing design docs but no link to Github repo
<https://github.com/lantern-works> (which is very recently active, also
recently created, also only 1-2 contributers). might wanna incorporate some
of the kinds of things they show here eg; use cases and app previews
* HERMES <https://github.com/DigitalHERMES> - second place - Rhizomatica -
active codebase, could be a contender, certainly has an excellent team -
doesn't have a super open source feel (no link to Github on their homepage,
for example)
* Emergency LTE - 3rd place - can't find any website, code, specs, etc
* goTenna <https://imeshyou.com/> - honorable mention - has an impressive
map, but nothing about the project is open source
* Wind <https://guardianproject.info/wind/> - honorable mention - project
by Guardian Project - no Github activity in months
* RAVE <https://github.com/commotionwireless/rave> - honorable mention -
project by Commotion - Github has nothing in it and last commit was in
November
* Baculus <https://xn--f87c.net/> - honorable mention - still only a design
doc, same with the Github repo <https://github.com/jedahan/baculus> (and 1
contributer)
* Portable Cell Initiative
<https://github.com/Ironarcher/portable-cell-initiative> - honorable
mention - recent github activity but also 1 contributer
* Othernet <http://blog.othernet.xyz/index.php/Timeline> - they at least
have a wiki and a team :D looks interesting, tho not a whole lot of progress
<http://blog.othernet.xyz/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&days=30&from=>
they did use half the funds to train 4 high school students
<http://othernet.xyz/othernet-engineer/>
Butofcourse, there will be 35 other projects contending that were advanced
to Round 2...
Compare to our progress <https://disaster.radio/updates/> (excellent
updates juul!) most demonstrable by looking at the github history
<https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio/commits/master>, as is the
actual-collaborative
<https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio/graphs/contributors> nature of
the project :)
Could we document the working prototype this week? I am available to run
between, say Captain Morgan's and Omni with a camera... and do some editing
work on the submission (tho focus for me is more on the People's Open
submission). Could also edit a short video with the footage Marc's already
taken.
If anyone has the spoons to hack on this this week, plz reply to this
thread!

Hi!
Just found out about this project, very exciting. I'd recommend that
developers consider attending the Decentralized Web Summit
<https://decentralizedweb.net/> that starts on July 31st. I believe that
folks that work on SSB will be present so might be a great opportunity to
collaborate.
I do know that there will be a humanitarian track; so again, this project
is a perfect fit.
Oh, and hi! I'm Paul. Sudo Room member lurker, Oakland resident and coder.
Happy to meet everyone

this might be the same thing Fitz already designed for the disaster radio
system, to manage solar charge and battery stuff, or maybe its design or
production could improve our situation, i don't know:
"Solar Power Manager 5V is a small power solar power management module designed
for 5V solar panel. It features as MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking)
function, maximizing the efficiency of the solar panel, suitable for various
solar power projects."

Subject: [sudo-discuss] diaster.radio modulation scheme tests
To: Sudo room <sudo-discuss(a)lists.sudoroom.org>
Hi all,
I ran some tests on LORA modulation schemes to get the best results I could
on a 100mW TX power budget.
I nearly ran out of gas during this latest test, and unfortunately I
managed to screw up my data logging, so I don't have RSSI or SNR data, but
this map contains all the places I stopped and got a two way signal on my
jet ski.
The transmitter was in my hand, the receiver was at pier 50, SF.
DIY half wave dipoles were used, with a center freq of 900MHz with a +/-
100MHz 3db roll off.
https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1dE2QZS9cgX_oHLWyzmUNAYrjlbX0wJp…
I found that quarter wave antennas are no good (see the red markers). The
blue markers are today's test, using RFM95's from HopeRF.
To get the very long range, I used the following modulation scheme using
the RadioHead library.
RH_RF95::ModemConfig modem_config =
{
/*Reg 0x1D: BW=125kHz, Coding=4/8, Header=explicit*/
(7 << 4) | (4 << 1) | (0),
/*Reg 0x1E: Spread=4096chips/symbol, CRC=enable*/
(12 << 4) | (1 << 2),
/*Reg 0x26: LowDataRate=On, Agc=On*/
(1 << 3) | (1 << 2)
};
RF95.setModemRegisters(&modem_config);
In other news, you can still jet ski if your core body temp is 88F. Little
unpleasant though.

Hey all,
I went to meetings a couple months ago but life got in the way. I started a
new job around that time and it was hectic for a minute. New job is hiring
more people though!
FreeWire is hiring an embedded systems / controls engineer, and I figured
this would be a great place to find sharp folks trying to make a real
difference in the world! We make a mobile electric vehicle charger and we
hope it will accelerate the adoption of these vehicles.
Job description: https://angel.co/freewire/jobs/245142-controls-engineer.
Please feel free to reach out if it looks interesting to you.
Cheers,
Max

*Bay Area War Tax Resisters and Friends,*
2018 has brought us a $700 billion US military budget, the heightened
threat of nuclear war and increasing attacks on immigrants, education,
health care, the environment and all but the most privileged in the US.
Those of us who stand against these threats to our very survival feel ever
greater reasons to resist militarism and war, and to redirect our taxes
toward life sustaining work! The National War Tax Resistance Coordinating
Committee's website <http://nwtrcc.org/resist/how-to-resist/> is an
excellent source of information on the methods and consequences of refusing
to pay for war.
The People's Life Fund <http://nowartax.org> is looking forward to
redirecting a record breaking $65,000 in resisted war taxes to local peace
and justice organizations this year! We have increased the maximum grant
size to $2,500 for 2018, and extended the deadline to March 23rd.
Applications can be downloaded here: PLF 2018 Grant Application
<http://www.nowar.tax/peoples-life-fund/plf-application-2018.docx>, or you
can use or forward the attached form.
We now have a People's Life Fund Facebook Page
<https://www.facebook.com/PeoplesLifeFund> where you can check for updates.
Please feel free to share it to let potential applicants know about this
year's grant cycle.
As usual, members with resisted war taxes deposited in the People's Life
Fund are welcome to take part in the decision making process for grants.
Let us know if you'd like to participate by emailing nowartax(a)riseup.net.
*Grassroots projects are especially encouraged to apply. 501(c)3 status is
NOT required! The deadline for PLF Grant Applications is Friday, 3/23/18 at
5 pm.*

Subject: [Mozilla/NSF-WINS] Stage 1 winners and Stage 2 instructions
To: Mehan Jayasuriya <wirelesschallenge(a)mozillafoundation.org>
Hello,
This morning, we announced the 20 teams that were chosen for awards during
Stage 1 of the NSF-WINS Challenges. You can view all of the winning
projects, as well as profiles of our judges, on the NSF-WINS website
<https://wirelesschallenge.mozilla.org/>.
If you’re receiving this email, your team has been selected to move on to
Stage 2 of the Challenges. We’re experiencing an issue where some teams did
not receive notification of their status via email; please find a copy of
the Stage 2 notification letter attached to this email. If you have any
additional questions about your application status, please let us know.
What’s Next?
The WINS Stage 2 application is now available via the Fluxx portal. Simply
log into Fluxx using your existing credentials in order to fill out the
application. Please see the application guide for a full set of
instructions on how to fill out the Stage 2 application
<https://wirelesschallenge.mozilla.org/_assets/NSF.WINS.application.guide.pdf>.
Please make sure you’re using the latest version of the guide (v1.3,
February 2018), as some of the Stage 2 application questions have changed
since the previous version. Your Stage 2 application is due by June 22nd.
What Will the Judges Be Looking for in Stage 2?
The goal of Stage 2 of the Challenges is to turn your design concept into a
working prototype that demonstrates what the capabilities of a real network
based on your design could be. This might mean a piece of hardware (for
example, a single network node that runs your software), an MVP (minimum
viable product) version of your solution or even a small-scale test network
that users can connect to. Judges will be looking for a prototype that can
demonstrate things like network speed, range and power consumption; please
see the application guide for a detailed list of criteria
<https://wirelesschallenge.mozilla.org/_assets/NSF.WINS.application.guide.pdf>
.
In July, a select number of Stage 2 finalists will be invited to a “demo
day” showcase in Mountain View, CA on August 14th, where they will demo
their working prototypes for judges. Finalists will be asked to give a
short presentation that identifies the problem they are trying to solve,
the intended users of their solution and the capabilities of their
prototype. More details on the demo day event will be provided this summer.
Congratulations on being selected to move on to Stage 2 of the Challenges!
We look forward to reviewing your working prototype this summer. If you
have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Mehan Jayasuriya
