Hi!
(Please spread the word to those you think might be interested in the
scholarship.)
We are opening a call for sponsored travel to attend Battlemesh for
anyone living outside Europe and would like to invite you to send your
application! Battlemesh is the annual conference/gathering/hack event on
community wireless networks and routing protocols will be between
3rd-9th August in Maribor, Slovenia. As Battlemesh is in the week before
the Chaos Communication Camp in Germany, this is an excellent
opportunity to be able to travel to both.
https://wlan-si.net/en/blog/2015/06/22/battlemesh-travel-scholarships-avail…
Event is free to attend and we still have organized accommodation
available at low cost.
Requirements
------------
Travel scholarships are open to people not living in Europe. To apply,
we would like to ask you to send a short video (not longer than two
minutes) to describe your situation:
- Where are you from?
- Why would you like to attend Battlemesh?
- What impact in your local environment do you expect from your
participation?
- Would you be able to attend without the travel scholarship?
- Will you continue to the Chaos Communication Camp? (Note that it is
not a problem if you also plan to go to the CC camp.)
Shoot a short video and upload it to one of the video sharing websites
and send us a link. Note that if it is private, we need a direct link
and/or password for it as well.
Contact
-------
E-mail your video to the local Battlemesh team at
<battlemeshv8(a)wlan-si.net>.
Deadline
--------
The deadline for applications is the 3rd of July. Decisions will be made
before 6th July.
What is Battlemesh?
-------------------
The Wireless Battle of the Mesh is an event that aims at bringing
together people from across Europe and beyond to test the performance of
different routing protocols for mesh networks, like Babel, B.A.T.M.A.N.,
BMX, IEEE 802.11s, OLSR. It is a tournament with a social character. If
you are a mesh networking enthusiast, community networking activist, or
have an interest in mesh networks and related technologies, come and attend.
The traditional goal of the event is to set-up hands-on testbed for each
available mesh routing protocol with a standard test procedure for the
different mesh networks. During the event, similar hardware and software
configuration will be used based on the OpenWrt and packages for each
protocol implementation. The event is also a great opportunity to
develop testing tools for PHY/MAC radio layers (drivers, scripts and PHY
analyzers). Alongside the testing of routing protocols, a number of
talks, workshops, and hackathons will be held on various mesh-related
topics, all from technology to community and social aspects of mesh
networks.
This years Battlemesh will take place from 3rd to 9th August 2015 in
Maribor, Slovenia.

Okay, cool, we will come on Tuesday.
Mike and I talked about meeting there the earlies possible, he mentioned
even 4pm would work for him. But, I have to confirm the time to him on
Tuesday, since I don't know how early I can leave from work that day.
I will try to message the list, so you know.
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Sudo meshers,
I had a great time helping install the Ethernet with you and wanted to
thank everyone for such a fun day today. I learned a lot I didn't know,
and I'm always gratefull for to learn from those opportunities.
I really appreciated the chance to follow the installation with you, and
learning the openwrt flashing and soldering the tp-link boards, really
expanded my technological horizons. Special thanks to Max and Mark for
showing me the ins and outs of cabling/routers/re-configuring wrt power
supplies, etc.!
Thanks to Benny and Daniel for such a great dinner!
And thanks to everybody for being such great company during 10+ hours of
installation!
I look forward to seeing you all again soon!
Sincerely,
Tom

Hi All,
I live in portland OR, and I am just recently getting interested in
wireless meshnets.
My current setup is two nodes, Raspberry Pi 2 Hardware, one with a tp-link
TL-WN722N, and the other with some sort of "panda wireless-n" adapter.
My problem is that I am getting around 30% dropped packets, and they are
about a foot apart, which makes me wonder if using a ad-hoc is a good idea
or not...
I have them both running Ubuntu 14.04
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi> and the most recent version of
cjdns.
My network configs are below:
root@ubuntu:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
wireless-channel 8
wireless-essid NeighborMesh
wireless-mode ad-hoc
So then I decided to just remove the wireless usb adapters, and run cjdns
over the eth0 interfaces, but I am still getting a consistent ~12% packet
drop with that:
--- fcfe:307d:38e5:5aa4:9bfc:a4ce:dd3d:969c ping statistics ---
76 packets transmitted, 67 received, 11% packet loss, time 75156ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 2.378/26.382/196.791/51.318 ms
Pinging the IPv4 address outside of cjdns works great, always:
--- 192.168.0.226 ping statistics ---
24 packets transmitted, 24 received, 0% packet loss, time 23002ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.640/0.675/0.783/0.036 ms
What am I doing wrong?
I *would* like to achieve standalone/independent wireless mesh nodes that
dont need a master access point to function. (I am imagining giving one to
my geek neighbor, and seeing if we can start a mini mesh network)
Does anyone have any suggestions?
-Cobin
Can you please unsuscribe me of this list? Danke.

I know the subject line is like.. woot!?? :)
But seriously... :) I am looking for someone to hold my hand and walk me
through (help me with) a couple of small projects. Here is what I wish to
accomplish:
1- to get a router with OpenWRT (Not sure of its capabilities, but I like
the idea to get ride of the corporate code, because potential backdoors)
2- and if needed, a tiny computer that would be always connected to a VPN
account, so that all home computers can use it as their gateway; IF the
router cannot do this.
What can I give in exchange?
Well, I don't know what knowledge I can share when all of you seem to be
way above my head.
I don't know, maybe Photography? Spanish? :)
Please let me know if interested, we can start right away. I am eager to
start this.
Many thanks,
Daniel

Hey so I'm super late, but I am definitely coming (I got sucked into
watching a basketball game!)
I did call these folks today:
http://www.hamradio.com/locations.cfm?storeid=3
I asked about non-penetrating mounts and they mentioned that they have
"tripods". I know that's not really what we were thinking about, but I
think it'll be worth it for me to swing by tomorrow and take a look. I'll
drive, so if anyone else is interested in swinging by, let me know.
Probably around 2:30 or so...
On other notes:
- What are people's thoughts about new payment processing solutions? We've
gotten some notices from gratipay that they've fixed their issues, but that
we'll have to re-apply as a "team". We *could* roll our own stripe system,
but in my experience using stripe to charge credit cards is easy, but
properly managing recurring payments is not that easy. I personally would
prefer to continue to allow a third-party to do that work. Does anyone know
what sudoroom is doing?
- The sudomesh.org server (and peoplesopen.net and all the other stuff) is
slowly being brought back to life. I believe that @sudomesh.org (and @
peoplesopen.net) email addresses are currently down, so it might make sense
for us to fix that first before we apply at gratipay again. I have
purchased a digital ocean VPS, so the next step is to finish setting it up
and then coordinate with marc on DNS settings.
- Node mounting this sunday? Of course, if we get the non-penetrating
mount, we can set up a link between Will and the Omni. Even if we don't get
the non-penetrating mount, there's plenty to be done. We need to run cable
(not a simple feat to do correctly), configure a mesh node tp-link or
mynet, configure extender node antennas, and create a link between them (we
can just do it by holding up a radio on the omni side by hand). Who would
be around to do some of this? Will is on this list, but I might get in
touch with him off-list anyhow to see if he'll be around and would be
interested.
Hi!
Please help us fill in the spreadsheet of community network management
solutions out there. We filled in those we know about, but even those
only partially. So if in your network you are using some solutions for
network management, please fill it in:
https://goo.gl/JbD4VC
As we are working on nodewatcher v3 we are trying to keep up with
developments of others. We will also use this data in the paper we are
writing about managing community networks. Feel free to use the data as
well. If you strongly feel that some column is missing, add it, but
remember that it has to be filled for all rows to be really useful.
Spreadsheet is CC0.
