Hello mesh people!
The next Build Your Own Internet office hours* is this Sunday April 1st from
1pm to late afternoon in SudoRoom <https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Directions>.
This week, we'll be going through steps to prepare for a node mount we're
doing in the late afternoon. For anyone interested, we'll go through the
steps of doing a mount so you can join (or even lead!) ones in the future.
Look forward to seeing y'all on Sunday.

** What are BYOI office hours? It serves …
[View More]two purposes:*
*1. A jumping off point for people interested helping with a scheduled
Sunday node mount, but who are not able to attend a Tuesday night meeting
or are not "in the know."*
*2. A friendly, non-confrontational time for new people to get oriented to
the project or just ask general questions about networking, the internet,
and their service provider.*
*We may also use the time to hold training sessions on a topic of choice,
conduct outreach to potential node locations, address finances and
purchasing, or tackle any other outstanding issues.*

Greets!
I said I would send deets on a proposed formal relationship between Sudo
Mesh and Omni, now that sudomesh is a legit 501c3 with some funding. This
was brought up at the Omni Finance WG meeting the other week
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Event:2018/03/12_Finance_%26_Fundraising>, as
we're in the process of updating our lease agreements with Omni member
collectives.
Proposal: Allocate $100/month to Omni in exchange for storage & meeting
space usage, plus a percentage of …
[View More]donations or set amount for ballroom
space usage for workshops
* All groups that utilize the building contribute something financially,
which enables the Omni to remain fiscally solvent. we've had a free ride
for a minute now, and now have financial resources we can share.
** Sample lease agreement attached.
* Optional, secondary proposal: We could become a member collective of the
Omni, since Sudo Mesh is its own organizational entity with hella upswing
right now. It's mostly a position of responsibility: attending 2x meetings
per month (via a Delegate representative, tho all meetings are open to the
public. any collective can also go 'inactive' after missing 2 meetings and
that's totally okay - we all bizzy) as well as having at least 2 sudomesh
members involved in Omni working groups (Robb and I already are, so that
req is kinda moot). These meetings are super on-point at this point in time
and good learnings for anyone interested in representative democracy,
consensus processes, and grappling with issues of intersectional
oppression.
** See also:
Member Collectives Handbook
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lQrDIBz1zg5xUl2quCA3RBWvINBnABb6UkWHoVs…>
** It would entail a written proposal and representation at an upcoming
Delegates Meeting (1st & 3rd Thursdays @ 7-9pm)

Hey fellow mesh-related humans,
We're having a strategy meeting for People's Open! We're doing this to help
come to some consensus on how we'd like to communicate with folks, and
where to best coordinate and focus our efforts. *Our ultimate goal is to
have several concrete projects that we'd like to implement over the next
year.*
*This meeting is mostly for people who are already participating actively
in organizing People's Open, and want to contribute over the next year.*
Please fill out …

that works best for the most people.

>> Please add your discussion item(s) where it says "== Discussion: X =="
or "== Proposal: X ==" and include any concise, relevant comments to inform
the discussion. Please also add the topic at the top under Agenda.
If you add something, we expect you to come to the meeting to give some
context and lead that discussion.
Thanks,

Hey meshers,
We will be continuing our Build Your Own Internet (BYOI) office hours*
this Sunday March 25th from 1pm to late afternoon in SudoRoom.
This week's ~theme~ is *Node Appreciation Day*!
Nodes (yes, your node too!) are an essential parts of our mesh network,
almost as important as you . . . the human that keeps your node up and
running. As you probably know, People's Open Network (
https://peoplesopen.net ) nodes look very much your regular internet
router, except for that they …
[View More]are social and open . Rather than ignoring
neighboring wifi networks, our nodes (and yours!) actually chat (or
mesh) with each other to collaboratively provide open internet to more
folks in a larger area.
Anyways, spring is coming, so bring your node over to the BYOI office
hours to get the latest patches for faster and more reliable access,
learn about how stuff works, hack, chat, socialize, wander, and perhaps
even help decorate some friendly People's Open Network node with
rhinestones or sweet mesh stickers .
Hope to see you there!
-jorrit
PS If you don't run a People's Open Network, but are curious learn more
about running a node, come on over and we'll show you around. Nodes are
available for a suggested $20 donation.
PS2 If you node is collecting dust and/or isn't running, please bring it
over and bring it back to life!

Hello mesh people!
The next Build Your Own Internet office hours* is this Sunday March 18th
from 1pm to late afternoon in SudoRoom
<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Directions>.
This week, we are excited to be welcoming visitors from *Alameda* who are
interested in Building their Own Internet!
We plan on providing them with formal training on the skills, knowledge,
and resources needed to start their own community wireless network. We are
looking for all the help we can get, here's an …
[View More]incomplete list of kind of
people we need to help us,
- *organizers*: people who can coordinate space, logistics, and people.
- *crimpers*: people who can share their ability to crimp ethernet cable
(it's easy, even if you don't know, we'll teach you)
- *mounters*: people who are familiar with the skills and equipment needed
to deploy a roof-mounted antenna
- *explainers*: people who are comfortable explaining how the People's Open
Network works, what doesn't work, and what we are working on!
- *whisperers*: people who can speak to the nodes on the mesh
- *outreachers*: people who can connect people to people
- *drawerers*: people who can connect lines, dots, nodes, etc. to form
pictures
- *talkers*: people who can talk to people
So pretty much anyone and everyone.
If you are able to make it Sunday afternoon, it would be great if you could
arrive by 12pm so we have time to clean up SudoRoom and organize some of
the equipment.
Finally, this event is, of course, still open to the public. In fact, it
would be a great time to come by and learn about the project!
Look forward to seeing y'all on Sunday!

hey meshers -
As I was troubleshooting with Daniel and Arthur during BYOI office hours
yesterday, we managed to get about 20 nodes back online. It reminded me
that we sorely need more folks that can, and are willing to, help out
with day-to-day network operations.
This why I'd like to volunteer to participate in another node whisperer
session (see https://github.com/sudomesh/node-whisperer-program)
provided there's enough interest.
The idea is that a node whisperer to-be will explain …
[View More]how PON works,
setup some nodes and show how commonly used tools (ip addr, tcpdump,
traceroute, dig, ip route, babeld and tunneldigger) can be used to
troubleshoot network connections and figure out who's meshing with what.
if this person feels sufficiently confident, then they'll get increased
access to our existing network.
*Please let me know if you are interested to help out with day-to-day
network operations (aka node whispering) and if you are interested in
joining tomorrow at 9p at Omni following the sudomesh meeting.* With a
reasonable amount of folks (>5) we should be able to have enough
collective knowledge/eyes to keep our network healthy without having to
rely on one or two individuals.
