URGENT: Invitation to In-Person and Zoom Meeting with CAST + Omni Commons Collectives Members (Thu June 27, 6PM)

Hello Sudo Mesh members, I hope this message finds you well. You are invited to an in-person and Zoom meeting with Community Art Stabilization Trust (CAST) and Omni Commons Collectives members on *Thursday, June 27th, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. * In recent weeks, CAST have been meeting with collective delegates at Omni to explore a potential partnership. However, due to a notice of foreclosure that we received right after our first meeting, these have quickly shifted focus to finding solutions to prevent Omni from losing the building. CAST is now prepared to meet with all Omni members, which is why this notice is being sent out to the group. Due to the meeting's confidential nature, recording will not be permitted. URGENT: Omni needs a loan

Hi everyone. The Omni Commons, the building that sudo mesh co-owns with sudo room, Counter Culture Labs, Food not Bombs and several other collectives just had a private lender back out of a loan last minute and now it cannot pay its $120k property taxes due tomorrow. If anyone is willing to lend us $120k or a portion thereof, even if it's for just three months until we to sort out another loan, please contact me. This needs to happen before tomorrow at 4 pm pacific time. The loan would be secured by the building as a second mortgage so it should be fairly low risk. -- marc/juul

moving to the basement

I propose that Sudoroom and Sudomesh take over the three (of four) basement rooms being vacated by Village of Love, paying a combined $1500 for them. In the past decade, Sudoroom has failed to scale its community to the size required to pay for its current space. It's been perpetually in debt ever since, never had any budget left over to invest in hacking, and had to ask forgiveness from Omni many times, putting the building in greater jeopardy. Besides its size, one of the nicest features of the current spot is natural sunlight - but virtually all Sudo gatherings happen after dark. We are paying for something we don't use. Omni is coming under increasing community pressure over the fact that majority-white collectives underpay for the biggest nicest spaces in the building, while pushing more diverse collectives into less desirable corners. This will be one way to make right. Downsizing is good for us, good for omni, and good for the newer BIPOC-led collectives that omni is trying to recruit. If sudoers agree, maybe a good timeline would be to announce intention to complete the move by February 1.

I know that for people who built sudomesh and have been working on the project this whole time, but who don't have time or availability to host meetings or onboard new people, this may read as unwanted pressure, but I agree with the principle of the idea. There are a lot of people who want to see sudomesh and its projects prosper, and effectively rejecting new energy and leaving it to people outside the project to handle requests for more information is not a good way to do things. Resuming Sudo Mesh

Hey, I want to plan a Sudo Mesh event. I'd like to get folks together, review all the existing materials and spitball ideas for what we'd like to do with Sudo Mesh. I want to be upfront: I know Sudo Mesh was developed by a lot of smart people through a lot of hard work, and I don't want to deny them their due or agency over this project. So if someone -- anyone -- who has worked on this before I showed up wants to guide the next steps, I would love that. To start with, I'm wondering how many people are seeing this message? Andrew, I apologize if you haven't gotten the response that you desire, there are so many communication channels available to us, that it's likely many don't want to respond to your request via the email list. Regardless, despite your claims SudoMesh is not an inactive project. As a distributed project, Marc probably just doesn't feel like he should be making unanimous decisions for the rest of the community. I doubt you hurt Marc's feelings, but more failed to understand his response: meeting are normally Tuesday nights at Omni Commons (where Sudoroom is located). If you come to Sudoroom's Hardware Hack night, most of the Sudomesh folks will be there talking about Disaster Radio, a node mount for the Sudomesh network, or our contributions to DWeb camp's Mesh network that is coming up soon. If you're looking for a Newbie night, this is still probably your best bet. As most folks don't have the bandwidth to commit to another night. If Tuesday night doesn't work for you, and you know of a lot of other folks that are new to ad-hoc mesh networks that would be interested feel free to suggest something, I'm sure that it can be worked out, but again, attention is a limited resource in most folk's lives. Mesh / Network equipment for DWeb Camp

Hi there, It's been a while since I've chimed in here. For those who don't know me, I used to be involved in Sudo Mesh/People's Open between 2017-2020 until the pandemic kind of slowed everything down. I'm writing because I'm one of the core organizers of DWeb Camp, an event organized by the Internet Archive about building a better, more decentralized web. This year it's happening for the third time this June 21-25, 2023 in Mendocino at Camp Navarro: https://dwebcamp.org/ We've always had a local mesh network component to the event, but this time, we're doing something different. We're shutting off the Internet on the third and final full day of camp on Saturday. We're calling that day Tomorrow, and we're going to use the opportunity to test out locally hosted p2p apps and spend the day doing emergent sessions. We're also planning a whole LARP-y narrative around *why* the Internet is going to be shut off. More info here: https://dwebcamp.org/tomorrow/ I'm telling you all this because I have two asks of Sudo Mesh folks: 1 - Local Network Build Volunteers -- We're looking for two people who can help us build the mesh network there at Camp and help us test it and maintain it through the event. We can offer a free ticket to the event to these volunteers in exchange (you would need to self-camp). Please note that we are looking for people who have some networking hardware/software experience. Illustrated walkthrough for flashing "raw" Aruba AP175 boards

Hi all, I'm sharing this info in case other communities outside of Newport Wireless Mesh may find it useful. The Aruba AP175 is a high-power, stable, electrically protected outdoor access point that I recently ported to OpenWrt, and I hope other communities might get good use out of it. It's old hardware, but very available, and for multiple reasons will likely enjoy long-term supportability (ath9k, 128M RAM / 16M NOR). Newport Wireless Mesh will continue to use Aruba AP175s that I have personally flashed. Van Tech Corner (THANK YOU, VAN!) did a video explaining how, given an Aruba AP175 in unknown state, we can use a Raspberry Pi or CH341A and 16-pin Pomona chip clip to reflash the Aruba AP175 to a custom U-Boot compatible with OpenWrt 23 and onwards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SikTSsRvQE Martin

Hopefully the mesh project will start having meetings too.
