Hi there,
Would someone be interested in answering questions for a free meal ?
I would like to start a mesh network in Paris and I'd like to know more
about antennas, servers, legal issues...
I am available tomorrow or next week after 6:30pm.
Thanks,
Keo

What's up with this? You may want to Check your node. The one I have has
this constant connection to a Server log ("100.64.0.10:514")?
Are all PON nodes pushing logs to a remote location, or is t just me?
I SSH to my PON node and while checking for current connections I see this
established connection "100.64.0.10:514 (Syslog Server?)?
Been refreshing for about 20+ minutes and the connection seems constant.
Can someone please explain this?

This thread is for tracking our grant.
We've submitted our "intent to apply", and we are waiting to receive our
invitation to "submit to stage one". The last day to submit the "intent
to apply" is October 15th, so we should confirm our submission is good
before then. Marc J is checking on this.
The next stage is submitting our application to the Design Concept Stage
by November 15th. I'll be emailing a document where we can collaborate
on writing this.
Pending confirmation from Dév who lives there, this Sunday's planned
mounting will take place at:
2:00 PM
1 Canyon Road, Berkeley
(Directly behind the stadium.)
Meet at Sudo Room 1-ish or meet at the house. Entrance is away from the
road/ not that obvious, mind.
l'm driving probably.
Whoever is coming please reply off list, or not.

Dear All,
We at Internet Policy Observatory Pakistan are running an initiative …
[View More]called
TOPS (Tactical Operations) activated during disasters across Pakistan.
Basically our tactical operations provide the following:
- 1) Tactical Operations team uses portable satellite communications
equipment to provide voice and data communications for aid workers who rely
on these tools to coordinate logistics and deliver lifesaving supplies.
- 2) Provide vital ICT Support (Internet, Telephone, Sat-phone and
E-mail) to first responders and relief organizations.
- 3) Establish multiple communications center equipped with internet,
phone and radio capabilities. In addition, iPOP tactical operations team
also provides free phone calls to people living in temporary camps and
shelters.
- 4) Establish dedicated communication center for women enabling them to
communication and reconnect them with displaced family members.
We have been working jointly with Provincial Disaster Management
Authorities on various missions during floods, earthquake and other man
made disasters. You can learn more about it http://ipop.org.pk/

I want to support Steve's request here; as someone who has dabbled in
Disaster Relief it feels like there's an opportunity to do impactful work
in the space but I don't know of any good places to get grounded in the
current state of the art. Can we have any part of the upcoming GAIA meeting
be focused on exploring this topic? Any domain experts in Singapore we can
invite?

Hey folks,
My friend is leasing a place in Richmond and I'd like to help set up some
internet connections at their place. I recall it might be handy to have
some stable spots in this area, and I think this might be a good location.
Let me know if you'd like to talk more about good options. I haven't been
available for usual mesh times lately, but I think I can meet up with
specific folks to talk details at other times. I plan to be at sudo
tomorrow night, weds.
Cheers,
Matt
Coucou,
TL;DR: Help?
After setting a N600 router following the wiki page, I am able to
connect my router using WiFi (using the private access point) but I
can't ping any device other than the ones connected to my router.
I don't know what to do now. Is there any troubleshoot page ?
To reproduce:
1. Follow the guide (well written!)

"The American Red Cross (ARC) has asked the ARRL for assistance with

assistance on this scale has been made. ARRL now …

Perhaps a source of inspiration for disaster communication scenarios.

Hi All,
Thanks for the introduction to the peoplesopen.net on Saturday at the Omni
Commons BYOI
I've got one router and successfully flash the firmware, all good.
Unfortunately I couldn't yet find any close signal around my place, still
need to climb on the roof and point to some possible directions. I'll try
to buy the small antenna someone show me on the event. I'm sorry I can't
remember your names.
I'd be interested in patch my firmware, as I've heard that there is
potential bug that can …
[View More]make the node use my internet instead of the VPN.
I've tested the firmware connecting the router to my ISP, got two
peoplesopen open networks and my private secure network, also could
successfully
access the internet through the VPN.
A practical question, do you have plans to put a captive portal, splash
screen explaining the free internet access? perhaps some explanations on
privacy, security, liability? I'm happy to share free internet to my
surrounds, but would be great to share what's going on.
Another few questions,
Has anybody found a way to connect raspberry pis ad-hoc mode onto the
peoplesopen? do I need two wifi USB devices? or the RPIs has already dual
band? I'm very interested in the potential to add RPIs nodes to this
existing mesh network.
I came across this https://nycmesh.net/meshberry/
And finally are the ESPs compatible with the mesh? can the ESPs talk to the
peoplesopen and also to others ESPs, this looks very interesting
https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio
Thanks
ps. I think would be better come to one of your sessions to discuss those
topics, right?

Hi-
l got your contact information from visiting Sherman Hall & Davis House
today.
l work with a community wireless mesh network based in north Oakland
called Peoplesopen Network. There are hate speakers invited on campus by
the UCB administration expected in the next week. l and some other folks
want to set up a mesh that covers campus (esp. the vicinity of Sproul
Plaza) during the anticipated events to provide internet connectivity.
The CalVisitor network has terrible coverage as is, and it has been
observed that the school stops service during some events. Supplementing
existing wireless infrastructure in events like these is exactly why
community mesh networks exist. It significantly increases safety for
everyone in the area. l write to ask you guys for help with setting up a
node (or more) that will provide bandwidth.
The node(s) need(s) not be permanent, (but we'd be happy to maintain
them, love them and make them part of the existing project if they
were.) We plan to have sneakernet nodes (humans carrying nodes) bounce
the signal to where service is required as the events progress. We also
have access to a great line of sight roof right across the street from
Davis and Sherman (which cannot provide bandwidth). Your involvement
will help a lot.
l plan on visiting Ridge Hall today.
l hope you can help!

Hi y'all,
We had another great BYOI workshop this afternoon. Thanks to everyone who
came through and helped out.
However, tomorrow is still Sunday! That means we're doing another Sunday
node mount. The location is in the Berkeley Hills on the southside of UC
Berkeley's campus. We will be meeting on location around 2pm, though we may
need some help transporting equipment from the Omni to the site. If anyone
would like to help out and needs more details, message me directly.
See ya Sunday,

A few people asked me about the net neutrality event at the Internet
Archive.
I'm not sure I summed it up well enough, so you can see for yourself if you
like.
The video is here: https://archive.org/details/NetNeutralityEvent%20
Panels' advice was: call your Senators, ask them to tell Ajit Pai to stop
his proceeding to repeal net neutrality rules. In other words, leave things
*as they are*.
That's it in a nutshell.
Could someone, please, check and report back if PON is in fact down?
Thanks!

I realize right now we are focused on building the network, but when we

would be a great service for people with (potentially) a low cost for
us. There are several encampments around Oakland that are in strategic

Does anyone know of good potential locations?
