Hi!
CSGSA (Computer Science Graduate Student Association @ Berkeley) got
some Amazon AWS credits for their students so I took $100 credit to use
for a VPN server for People's open network. I think it is good to see
how it works there because if we have an image for it we can easily
scale than VPNs all around the globe. But first we have to see if they
work and how they work and what are downsides. Credit is good until the
end of August.
Please somebody take this over and contact me for details. First step is
probably to prepare some way to easily deploy Tunneldigger VPN server
instances on Amazon.

Hey just a quick heads up that a few mesh folks will be meeting up to
work on stuffs this afternoon/evening. Juul is already at Sudo and I'll
probably be there around 5. If you're at all interested, swing by and
hang out/help out.
Hi!
If anybody wanna learn more about networks theory in more abstract
terms. :-) You can probably just crash the course. :-) Lectures are
always open.

Networks
To: eecs-announce(a)lists.eecs.berkeley.edu
Course website: http://faculty.unlv.edu/pushkin/RNClass/RN.html
Class on *Resilient Networks* started on Wednesday, January 22nd, EE 290O,
from 3:00PM to 4:30PM in 240 Bechtel, Mondays and Wednesdays. The first
class was an introduction to the topics and methods that will be covered in
the class during the semester. General information about the content of
the class material is below.
Resilient Networks:
Interconnected networks are becoming more and more important in society.
Some examples of these networks include internet, transportation networks,
power and utility networks, financial networks, sensor networks,
multi-agent systems, social networks, etc.
Resilience of networks involves the topological structure, as well as
dynamics of networks. The course will study structure (combinatorics,
pretopology) and dynamics (deterministic and stochastic) on these networks.
Scaling issues from microscopic to macroscopic behaviours, games on
networks, the interplay between graph and dynamics (algebraic graph
theory), performance measures for networks, queuing theory on networks,
network calculus and scale-free complex networks phenomenon will be
studied. Python programming language will be used with its graph library
for working with sample example networks during the course.

Hi!
Cool. I invite you to learn more about HAM! It is really good to know
more about low-level things of the technologies you are using.

Subject: [eecs-announce] Amateur Radio (HAM) is Back in EECS
To: eecs-announce(a)lists.eecs.berkeley.edu
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
Topics:
1) Amateur Radio Exam on Campus
2) License Preparation Lectures on Campus
3) Demonstration of Satellite communications tomorrow memorial glade
4) What is HAM and what is it good for
5) Ham-shack in Cory Hall
6) Link to all the info: http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~ee123/sp14/HAM.html
1) Exam:
As part of a do-it-yourself, maker, I can build it trend the department
has been leading I am trying to revamp the amateur radio activity in the
department.
As such, I have organized a special exam session for an FCC Ham radio
operator license . The session will be on Feb 26th 7-9pm HP auditorium,
Soda Hall
and is open to EVERYONE, students, staff, faculty, family and friends.
My students in EE123: Digital Signal Processing will all be taking the
exam.
2) Preparation
Even though the exam is EASY for EECS/CS majors, in the next 3 weeks I
am going to give a series of lectures to prepare for it. The first one
is going to be this Friday, Jan 31st 5-6pm HP auditorium, Soda Hall.
3) Tomorrow, Wednesday Jan 29th we are going to have a demonstration on
satellite communication with handheld radios in memorial glade. Just
look for people walking around with antennas. Satellite Saudisat 1c
OSCAR-50 is going to flyby from 12:20-12:34 so be there on time.
4) Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) is a popular hobby and service in which
licensed Amateur Radio operators (hams) operate communications
equipment. Although Amateur Radio operators get involved for many
reasons, they all have in common a basic knowledge of radio technology
and operating principles, and pass an examination for the FCC license to
operate on radio frequencies known as the Amateur Bands.. These bands
are radio frequencies reserved by the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) for use by ham radio operators.
The role of amateur radio has obviously changed with the presence of the
internet. Remarkably, amateur radio today offers unique opportunities
and capabilities due to its independence on commercial infrastructure.
For example, it is a legal ground for hands-on experimenting with
wireless communication technology and it allows communication in
emergencies and from remote areas.
What can you do as a HAM?
Talk to people (near and far)
Build stuff (amps, sdrs, antennas, receivers)
Emergency communications (emcom)
First person view (FPV) vehicles (drones) at much higher power of
communication for long distance
Hit satellites, moon, meteors, airplanes (with radio waves! not
something else)
Digital communication with Automatic Positioning and Reporting System,
packet radio
Use Repeaters covering bay-area, California and the United States, mesh
networks
5) Activities in amateur radio at the University of California Radio
Club go back to 1914! According to the January 1923 issue of CALIFORNIA
ENGINEER, the amateur radio station was originally established in the
Mechanics Building in February of 1914. For 30 years or more the radio
station was located in Cory Hall up until the renovation of this
building in the 1980s. I'm trying to get a Ham shack back on the 5th
floor of Cory Hall. If you are interested in participating, please shoot
me an email and I'll put you on an email list for more info.
6) For more information, please visit

Hello Meshers,
ITEM 1:
- -------
I have a High School Vice Principal interested on hearing about what
kind of technology presentation the SudoRoom and or SudoMesh could
present at his School.
The topic of Mesh wireless network sounded good to him, that said that
he would like to see if it is something that can be a Senior project
for next year.
Anyhow. I wanted to bring this news in person, but I feel a bit under
the weather, so I am most likely staying home tonight.
BTW, I was told that there is Science Teacher there that already has
two 3D printers going in his classroom, and that he is more into Open
Source. I showed him the Tuesday night calendar (3D class).
I will provide the VP's contact information, in private, to those who
will talk to him. I thought about Jennie and/or Marc.
Oh yes, The VP is also one of the Technology coordinators at his school.
ITEM 2:
- -------
The video. I am so far behind on the video. If one would like to know
my excuses, please let me know; I will send a file with the list. :)
I was wondering if we could have a slice on space on the new server,
with permissions/access for those working on it? Just a thought. So
that I can upload the video clips that we have selected so far or we
need to select from.
I personally would prefer to upload locally via Ethernet cable, to
keep things private. I'd suggest the same for the rest of us working
on it.
What do you think Jeremy? Juul?
Mesh the Planet! ...one School at the time! :)

Marc Juul, is this possible? What equipment do you recommend?
On a side note, I bumped into Alex Hagen of Etheric Networks at that EFF

Hey meshy folks,
As per our conversation last week, we're DEFINITELY having a networking
class meetup Thursday at 6pm at sudo. This officially means that we're
all accountable. The format can be super relaxed, but I would highly
recommend that people watch at least the first two weeks of lectures and
have tried to do the first two weeks of homeworks. If you're behind,
it's ok, but we should all really try to make an effort. Also, we can
try to remember to be on IRC, so if remote folks want to participate, we
might be able to do it that way.
See you then!

To: katitza(a)eff.org
Dear Friends of the Internet:
The Snowden revelations have provided us with disturbing details and
confirmation of some of our worst fears about the NSA and its partners’
spying practices. Indeed, the NSA and its allies in five
English-speaking countries have been building a global surveillance
infrastructure to “master the internet” and spy on the world’s
communications. They are undermining basic encryption standards, the
very backbone of the Internet. They have collected the phone records of
hundreds of millions of people who are not suspected of any crime. They
has swept up the electronic communications of millions of people at home
and abroad indiscriminately, exploiting the digital technologies we use
to connect and inform. They have secretive data sharing agreements
operating outside the rule of law.
But we aren’t going to let the NSA and its five allies ruin the
Internet. Inspired by the memory of Aaron Swartz, fueled by our victory
against SOPA and ACTA, we are joining the DayWeFightBack campaign to
demand an end to mass surveillance at home and abroad.
The SOPA and ACTA protests were successful because we all took part, as
a community. As Aaron Swartz put it, everybody "made themselves the hero
of their own story." We can set a date, but we need all of you, the
users of the Internet, to make it a movement.
When: The Day We Fight Back has been set for February 11th.
Here's how you can join the effort:
1. Send an email to rights(a)eff.org confirming your interest in
participating in this action and receiving updates. Let us know what you
would like to do in your own country so we can send you more information
and amplify your voice.
2. Visit TheDayWeFightBack.org.
3. If you are a citizen of the world, sign the 13 Necessary and
Proportionate Principles here:
https://en.necessaryandproportionate.org/take-action #privacyisaright
4. Use social media tools to announce your participation.
5. Develop memes, tools, websites, and do whatever else you can to
encourage others to participate.
6. Be creative -- plan your own action. Go to the streets. Promote the
Principles. Then, let us know so we can broadcast your efforts.

Hi meshers!
As you may already know, we received a donation of a 10 TB storage server
from the Novato Unified School District (!)
We'll soon write a proper thank you post and put them on our list of
sponsors.
For now, I wanted to announce that it was picked up in Novato with the help
of Pete, and over the past two days Daniel (who was the main force behind
making this donation happen) and myself have set up the storage server.
It's at sudo room for now and it's running GNU Mediagoblin. Until we find a
better spot for it, you can reach it at:
http://datasink.sudomesh.org:8000/
So far I've heard two suggestions for uses of this server:
* A community-curated library of free and open media.
* Encrypted storage for folks using the mesh.
Let's see how we like mediagoblin for the first use. Right now I've
installed plugins for: Video, audio, pdf, stl (3d models) and ascii art :)
Some specs:
* 2 dual-core 2 GHz Xeon processors
* 4 GB ram (and four more slots to fill)
* 2x 160 GB sata drives in raid 1 for operating system
* 10x 1 TB sata drives in raid 5 for storage
* 15 total hot-pluggable harddrive slots
* Debian 7
We could likely fit a few more sata drives inside, if we're ok with them
not being hot-pluggable. If we filled it with 3 TB drives, then we could
probably upgrade it to about 55 TB for about $2000 worth of drives.
I also set up a phpbb support forum. The idea is that the stickers that go
on the power supply will list the address h.sudomesh.org and that url will
take them to a page (that doesn't yet exist) that links to user
documentation, node operators documentation, developer documentation and a
support forum. For now there is just the support forum at:
http://h.sudomesh.org
aliases are: help.sudomesh.org and support.sudomesh.org
I was tweaking the phpbb theme and was planning on switching the color
scheme to something more in line with the sudo mesh colors (and maybe
remove the jagged edges), but ran out of steam.
More work to be don!
