Sudomesh node 20 (MAC: 0090A90C76E0) will be going offline indefinitely on 1 December 2019.
I would like to return nodes 20 (currently online) and 6 (currently offline, acting as a spare) to Sudo Room for redeployment.

Hey all,
I was just visiting a friend in SC who had a node from this net in their
place. Is it using the exact same firmware, configuration, and
documentation as sudo mesh is using for peoplesopen.net?
If so, want to verify that devices flashed DIY and configured automatically
will be inter-operable. If not, I am interested in creating a bridge
between the networks or devices.

My email follows:

Dear Ms. Kaplan,
thank you for any efforts to safeguard choice and oppose anti-competitive
practices in provision of ISP services to multi-unit rental housing. It's
good to see Sonic expand in Oakland, and the work of People's Open Network.
Such expansion and diversity …

Hey, all! Here's a quick update of the goings on at People's Open over the last couple of months:
Matt went to Our Networks (https://ournetworks.ca/) in Toronto
He brought back a super cool wifi spamming device! Ask him more about it.
Seth, Mai, and Juul tabled at Richmond's Spirit & Soul Festival (https://www.richmondmainstreet.org/spirit-soul-festival/)
They met people representing really cool orgs in Richmond including NIAD (http://niadart.org/) (Nurturing Independence through Artistic …
[View More]Development), and No Coal in Richmond (https://ncir.weebly.com/) (Richmond resident-activists fighting against the handling of coal)
They tested out the new Mobile Citizen hotspots recently procured by Jenny
They met the mayor of Richmond!
Benny and Dig met up to renew each others' interest in developing the mesh monitor (https://peoplesopen.net/monitor)
Jackson planted the seeds for the long-awaited mesh services directory / browser. Watch our progress in these (https://github.com/sudomesh/services-registry-server) repos (https://github.com/sudomesh/services-registry-client/).
Tyler conducted a site-survey with an ORCA (https://www.ww6or.com/) repeater trustee for a new node location
Mai met with community members in People's Park who use the rechargeable hotspot set up by Juul and Aidan earlier this year.
It sounds like Aidan might run for Berkeley mayor in 2020 (https://ccc.gp.org/aidan-hill/)! Support this lovely and amazing human!
Marc, Mai, Fitz, and others in collaboration with Nico from APC (Association for Progressive Communications) (https://www.apc.org/) are reviving the disaster radio (https://disaster.radio/) project and beginning work on its next iteration
Eve and Benny coordinated a lovely and steep hike up the Claremont Canyon Fire Trail in Berkeley
Jenny got a job that pays her to learn python! WOOT!
This October/November, look forward to updates on the above, plus:
jmg is planning to get his house on the mesh
We'll be raising money for the continued work on disaster radio. People getting paid to do amazing work! Hooray!
Matt is going to Palestine, and Nico from APC is traveling all over the place (Mexico, Peru, Tanzania, Germany, too many to list!) to communities that could benefit from a working disaster radio.
Seth will work with Moni to design and print a banner for future tabling at this emergency prep fair (https://bdpnnetwork.org/event/community-based-dp-demofair-2019/) and beyond
Ryan and Benny will collaborate on people's open communications
It's going to be Halloween!

NodeOne earn and own hosting a micro-internet network
NodeOne was built to enable people without technical skills to set up micro-internet networks to get access to alternative internet services at an affordable price without facing double chargers from internet service providers like Telecom's and ISP's

To date over 8 nodes deployed with 8 nodeMasters and 623 members using micro-internet networks to get affordable access to internet services.

[View More]NodeOne
NodeOne default apps run 100% without an internet connection enabling members to have access to an affordable way to get access to internet services.
1: Reba is a media app which indexes the web for any video related content and saves the data locally. The videos are served in a local environment after downloaded from the web, meaning users in the same network can search and index the web without internet access, each video is downloaded and locally cached. This means that if the next user searched for the same video they will view the locally saved content, saving bandwidth.
2: Sema is an app which enables users on NodeOne network to effectively communicate without being connected to the internet, Unlike how other traditional apps, where one buys internet data to make a call, Sema enables NodeOne users to do video calls and communicate for free.
3: Baaza is a search engineer built to make NodeOne users search the web to get access to dynamic websites. Baaza runs without internet connection giving users the ability to get free local access to information from the web.

Online Anonymity, Privacy, the Tor Browser and More
*Tuesday, September 17 at 2:00 PM PT*
As platform companies, phone companies, advertisers, governments and others
surveil all aspects of our online activities and interactions, concerns
frequently turn to how individuals and organizations can increase
expectations of privacy and anonymity online. In this interactive learning
session, we'll explore different meanings of "privacy" and "anonymity", and
discuss several tools to limit who can track you online, including virtual
private networks and browser plug-ins. We'll specifically focus on the Tor
Browser, which is designed to inhibit all attempts to know your identity or
location when you visit web sites. Come with your questions and ready to
learn about how you are watched as you live online and what you can do
about it!

Managing and Protecting Your Organization's Digital Identity
*Tuesday, October 1 at 2:00 PM PT*
A nonprofit's online identity has arguably become as central and essential
to success as their offline identity. Domain names, social media handles,
critical cloud accounts, representation and depiction in online spaces: all
these elements contribute to how social change organizations are perceived
by the vast majority of the world. But holistic and comprehensive
management of organizational digital identity is an under-studied practice
area. Rapidly evolving technology categories continually create new
categories of institutional vulnerabilities for nonprofit organizations.
And too few organizations apply security and sustainability best practices
when managing their online identity - from ownership of domains and hosting
of web sites, to safeguarding remotely stored data, to managing virtual
relationships. This workshop will share and explain in managing
organizational online identity, and demonstrate processes, tools and rules
of thumb for effectively safeguarding and protecting the virtual side of
your nonprofit organization.

Benny, Mai and I plan to meet for a hike in Claremont Canyon hike, next
Wednesday Aug. 28, at 7pm.
The location is in this link:

The hike will be steep-ish. We will ascend in light and descend at dusk.
I'm bringing a flashlight.
We hope you can join us!
Hey Sudo Mesh people,
At a meeting over a month ago, we decided to try re-configuring our meetings in the following way:
1ST Tuesday of the month — Newcomers' Welcome + Work Jam: We encourage new folks to come to this one so we can give people an orientation and explain various aspects of Sudo Mesh / People's Open Network.
LAST Tuesday of the month — Admin + Planning Meeting: When we discuss our ongoing projects, to-do items, plan upcoming meetings, etc. This is most like the meetings we …
[View More]used to do every week.
EVERY OTHER Tuesday — Sudo Mesh Work Jams: All other Tuesdays will be nights when we meet and co-work on things like fixing bugs, writing documentation, doing outreach, fundraising tasks, or anything else that we decide needs doing!
This is an experiment that we're trying out for the next few months. We'd talked about having more opportunities to co-work on stuff and thought we might get more done as a group if we changed up our meeting schedule this way.
Have feedback? Wanna find something to work on? Come to our next Admin + Planning meeting is NEXT TUESDAY AUGUST 27th 7:30 - 9:00 PM and share your thoughts and ideas. :)
cheers,
Mai

Hi!
(If some other mailing list is more suitable, please redirect me to it.)
So I got Sonic gigabit connection at home. And I am thinking that all
this symmetric gigabit connectivity should be used well. So I am
thinking that I could deploy a People's open node + Tor relay node on
the link.
I think I have Tor part figured out: I could use Intel NUC like:
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/130392/intel-nuc-kit-n…
And then I could directly connect it to the uplink and run …
[View More]Tor relay
node on it. I would configure NUC to serve as my home AP as well,
although I am not yet sure if this can really be done:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1161398/configuring-a-dual-band-wifi-ap-on-…
But the issue is that I do not know how to add People's open node to
this mix. If I put it before the NUC, I think that a simple WiFi router
acting as People's open node will not be able to process gigabit and
tens of thousands of NAT connections Tor relay will try to send through
the router, if the node is put as the main router. But NUC does not seem
to have two Ethernet ports that it could serve as a router in front of
the node. Any ideas?

Hello All,
I was reading "How to do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy" by local
Oakland author Jenny Odell, an excellent book on how to reclaim your mind
from the commercialization of tech. In Chapter 6 "Restoring the Grounds for
Thought" sudo mesh is mentioned as an example of technology that can make
the concept of "place" and "context" important again. It's a tad academic,
but I thought you might like to read your fame:
When I asked my friend Taeyoon Choi, cofounder of the School of …
[View More]Poetic
Computation in New York, about a network that would allow you to “listen to
a place,” he suggested local mesh networks like Oakland’s PeoplesOpen.net.
The nonprofit Sudo Room, whose volunteers develop the mesh network,
describe it as a people-powered, “free-as-in-freedom alternative” to
centralized, corporate servers: “Imagine if the wifi router in your home
connected to the wifi routers in your neighbours’ homes and they again
connected to their neighbours to form a huge free wireless network spanning
the city! That’s exactly what a mesh network is, or at least what it can
be.”18
The volunteers add that mesh networks would be particularly resilient in
the event of a natural disaster or state censorship. Alongside instructions
for “building your own internet,” they provide a directory of other
community networks, like NYC Mesh, Philly Mesh, and Kansas City Freedom
Network. And PeoplesOpen.net’s mission statement seems to echo that of
Community Memory:
[W]e believe in the creation of local internets and locally-relevant
applications, the cultivation of community-owned telecommunications
networks in the interest of autonomy and grassroots community
collaboration, and ultimately, in owning the means of production by which
we communicate.19
Make a great day,
Max Klein ‽ http://notconfusing.com/

Hi folks.
I'm going to miss the meeting on Tuesday the 18th to go to this event:
https://supporters.eff.org/civicrm/event/register?reset=1&id=226
If you're interested, you should register now.
If enough of us are going then we could decide to have this event
replace our regularly scheduled meeting.

We could have gigabit internet at Omni!
LMI sent this almost 2 months ago and I'm not sure how to reply
because the account is still in Marc Juul's name.
Is there a way to change the account to give multiple people access to it?
I just passed a Sonic truck on Shattuck on my way over here today.
They're putting optical splitters to peoples' houses less than a mile
up the road. It's time for us to get some of this. :)

Hello anyone out there, just flashed a router (My Net N600) using the
auto-config latest version software, but the mesh SSIDs don't seems to
connect, just the private one.
Is the auto-config working properly or should not use it?
Thanks,
Daniel
[Changed private SSID via browser, and root and admin passwords vis SSH.]
