Hello Sudo Meshers,
This coming meeting is on the first Tuesday of the month. Do you know what that means...?
Another hang out / newcomers' night!
It's time to relax and talk about decentralized/democratized/mesh internet over snacks and drinks. It's also a great time to welcome new folks who are interested in the project and want an informal setting to get to know what we're about.
This week we may watch a short documentary about municipal/community-owned fiber internet.
* WHEN: 7:30 – 9:00 PM First Tuesdays of the month
* WHERE: Omni Commons Mezzanine (the area right above the main entrance, on the 2nd floor)
* THINGS TO BRING (OPTIONAL): A laptop. Food/drinks to share.
Event on Omni calendar: https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/sudo-mesh-hang-out-newcomers-night-4 (https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/sudo-mesh-hang-out-newcomers-night-…)
Whether you haven't been around in a while or it's your first time, we'd love to see you! So come by, say hi, and stay for a bit.
cheers,
Mai
Sorry, I don't remember who asked me about this & now may be a bit late!
Someone at Tuesday's meeting asked me about local ham radio clubs.
Saturday morning (tomorrow) is the monthly meeting of the Alameda club.
The topic might have broader appeal than other meetings.
Anyone is welcome.

*ARCA Meeting Saturday, March 23 @ 9 AM*
At the Alameda Hospital, Room 2A (2nd Floor)
State of EMCOMM in Alameda - 2019
- A major Earthquake erupts on the Hayward fault!
- A 6 inch gas line explodes in your neighborhood.
- Vandals cut the phone lines to the 911 Dispatch Center.
If these happened tonight, would you know what to do or how you can help
your family, your neighbors, your city?
Come to the March 23rd ARCA Meeting and hear about how you can protect
yourself and help your community in case of disaster.
Topics include:
· What do you need to know before a disaster strikes.
· What training should you take before something happens.
· Differences between an obvious disaster and a hidden one.
· What should you do right after a disaster occurs.
· How can you help your neighbors and community using your radio
skills.
· What equipment is needed and what types of locations/jobs will
need to be filled.
· What is the difference between a Resource net and a Tactical net.
· What Community Service events are in the area that you can
participate in to get more hands on training in a real world event.
This will be presented by Jerry Juhala – KT6CRT in association with Alameda
CERT and the city of Alameda Disaster Preparedness Group.

Subject: [ORCA] Radio job at Google - Wireless Architect

oakland_ca_hams(a)yahoogroups.com
Hi ORCA Hams & Oakland Radio folks,
In case you or someone you know might be interested, there is an opening
for a "Wireless Architect" with Google's security team in Sunnyvale:
https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/6334958253047808/
Looks like it requires significant radio system engineering experience, as
well as some management experience.
If you or someone you know is interested, please let me know and I would be
happy to submit your resume internally first, which will get it in front of
a recruiter more quickly than applying online.

Hey, all! Ben Lau from Toronto Mesh (https://tomesh.net) will be in the bay area on Saturday, April 6th to give a small workshop on how to facilitate mesh workshops :) It will look something like this (https://tomesh.net/2018-12-17/facilitating-mesh-workshops/) and will take about 3 hours.
I'm really excited to participate--I expect to learn a lot about meshing raspberry pis and peer-to-peer apps, but also about their particular perspective on how to talk to people about community networks and why they're politically important.
The time is TBD. Send me an e-mail directly if you want to participate and we can all figure out a time together.

== Check in on previous action items ==
Check previous meeting minutes at https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/Minutes and past action items below:
* Lesley: I (or someone) should probably document the set up protocols for the 60 GHz stuff. Basically, you have to set up your own DHCP server (we used an unflashed N600) and then instead of just going to the IP they tell you to go to, look up the new IP.
* write script for updating home nodes to use exitnode domain names @bennlich
** Did not do
* follow up with ideas generated in idea brainstorms @bennlich
** Did not do
* poke tony re: berkeley marina tower @tunabananas
** jenny: got a weird message. ryan oliver/alder already pursuing setting up a 30ft mast, hold off on the yacht club idea--were iffy. added action item to poke again. there are multiple stakeholders, yacht club, sailing club, city.
** sierk: maybe we should go to the sailing club's sunday hangout which happens once monthly
** jenny: building more relationships and getting to understand the layout over there
* handshake tokens @juul
** did not get to
* ping david and niki re: sunday @tunabananas
** rooftop node that needs ethernet cable re-run and might have LOS to here and there camp
* ping toan and clark re: here/there camp as well as ashby bart FNB office @sierki
** Sierk: every sunday 10am they have an assembly of the camp. probably the best thing is for 1-3 of us to go to one of the assembly meetings and Toan is willing to be the contact person. They're interested and willing to do outreach to the neighbor buildings. It's a really organized camp with consensus meetings every sunday at 10 am. I'm willing to come along if someone wants to go. We already put a node on david an nicki's house who live a couple of blocks away. I can ask Rob if he's willing to come.
** benny: I can go this sunday
** Sierk: I will talk to Toan and come with.
* ping marc about golden gate paxio link @bennlich
** marc has already messaged him and he hasn't replied.
* work on a flyer/1-pager re: effects of RF waves @sierk @tunabananas
** not yet. added action item to dump stuff on the wiki.
** mai: we should make a list of things like that that we want to create. handout about security, for neighbors to give neighbors
* circulate survey re: Oakland ISP choice from EFF — sudomesh mailing list and social media @iamai
** mai: Did not do but will do it tonight!! Got another email from Tracy yesterday.
* ping LOLspace re: downed extender node @tunabananas
** pinged toda
** should remember to take a photo of the router setup upon completion of a node mount and add to its trello card
* juul: put the Calyx router in a waterproof enclosure
** got a waterproof bag
** going to give them a battery at first, solar panel later
* radio witness
** Info: https://medium.com/@rhodey/the-radiowitness-io-dsp-pipeline-part-1-where-to…
** @notrhodey has been working on this project, Radio Witness, that scans police channels and stores recordings. proposal to set it up at the IA site
** mai: should we ask internet archive if they want to host a copy of it?
** sierk: yes--the main thing IA does is store stuff on hard drives
** mai: why don't we put one on omni?
** marc: one on the richmond tower will probably capture the entire bay area. might make sense to put one in south bay too.
* peoples park meeting 1pm in council grove or grassroots house if it's raining
** juul: going to try to be there this sunday

** I asked if he would be up for facilitating a workshop while he's in town and he's game! This would be a slightly modified version of their curriculum focused on training future facilitators. https://tomesh.net/2018-12-17/facilitating-mesh-workshops/

Heya! I'm planning an installation of a meshnet node in my campus apartment (and hopefully deploying more nodes on campus?) but I'm concerned about our captive portal.
Whenever someone logs onto the campus residential internet, we have to sign in with our student ID and then our MAC address is logged. When you plug a wifi router into one of these campus ethernet ports, they force you to set it up in LAN cascade mode which just makes the router act like an extension of the campus routers (I think? Correct me if I'm wrong here.)
What can be done about this so we can set up meshnet nodes?
Thanks!

Hey there,
We all know that ISP monopolies are terrible. One of the reasons that many of us are involved in Sudo Mesh/People's Open Network is because we want to create a community-owned, open-source alternative to privatized corporate internet infrastructure.
We're part of a coalition of organizations and local ISPs (Media Alliance, EFF, Greenlining Institute, Monkeybrains, Sonic) that are working to ensure that landlords can't get in the way of Oakland residents choosing their internet provider of choice. Specifically, it's about landlords not making exclusive marketing agreements or revenue sharing schemes with the likes of Comcast or AT&T in their buildings. But we also helped propose language in the Oakland ordinance so that it would protect tenants when they have a People's Open Net node installed on their building. (For more context, see this blog post on the EFF website: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/02/oakland-renters-deserve-quality-servi… (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/02/oakland-renters-deserve-quality-servi…) and this one: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/12/hardwood-floors-natural-light-and-rig…) (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/12/hardwood-floors-natural-light-and-rig…)
IF YOU LIVE IN OAKLAND please fill out this survey about your experience with ISP choice — it'll take only 3~10 minutes >>> https://www.eff.org/oakland-isp-payola (https://www.eff.org/oakland-isp-payola)
These anecdotes of how people have experience restrictions on their choosing their ISP will help us make the case to Oakland officials to support this ordinance. We already have some allies in City Hall but having concrete stories of what this law could do would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks a whole bunch.
Mai
