Heya! I'm planning an installation of a meshnet node in my campus apartment (and hopefully deploying more nodes on campus?) but I'm concerned about our captive portal.
Whenever someone logs onto the campus residential internet, we have to sign in with our student ID and then our MAC address is logged. When you plug a wifi router into one of these campus ethernet ports, they force you to set it up in LAN cascade mode which just makes the router act like an extension of the campus routers (I think? Correct me if I'm wrong here.)
What can be done about this so we can set up meshnet nodes?
Thanks!

Hey there,
We all know that ISP monopolies are terrible. One of the reasons that many of us are involved in Sudo Mesh/People's Open Network is because we want to create a community-owned, open-source alternative to privatized corporate internet infrastructure.
We're part of a coalition of organizations and local ISPs (Media Alliance, EFF, Greenlining Institute, Monkeybrains, Sonic) that are working to ensure that landlords can't get in the way of Oakland residents choosing their internet provider of choice. Specifically, it's about landlords not making exclusive marketing agreements or revenue sharing schemes with the likes of Comcast or AT&T in their buildings. But we also helped propose language in the Oakland ordinance so that it would protect tenants when they have a People's Open Net node installed on their building. (For more context, see this blog post on the EFF website: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/02/oakland-renters-deserve-quality-servi… (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/02/oakland-renters-deserve-quality-servi…) and this one: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/12/hardwood-floors-natural-light-and-rig…) (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/12/hardwood-floors-natural-light-and-rig…)
IF YOU LIVE IN OAKLAND please fill out this survey about your experience with ISP choice — it'll take only 3~10 minutes >>> https://www.eff.org/oakland-isp-payola (https://www.eff.org/oakland-isp-payola)
These anecdotes of how people have experience restrictions on their choosing their ISP will help us make the case to Oakland officials to support this ordinance. We already have some allies in City Hall but having concrete stories of what this law could do would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks a whole bunch.
Mai

* WHEN: 7:30 – 9:00 PM First Tuesdays of the month
* WHERE: Omni Commons Mezzanine (the area right above the main entrance, on the 2nd floor)
* OPTIONAL THINGS TO BRING: A laptop. Food or drinks to share.
Event on Omni calendar: https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/sudo-mesh-hang-out-newcomers-night-2 (https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/sudo-mesh-hang-out-newcomers-night-…)

Hi folks,
I just wanted to reach out and say that we are really trying to locate
Oaklanders who have been pushed by their landlords to use a big incumbent
ISP. Their stories will assist with getting an Internet choice law in place
in Oakland. We will protect identities if necessary.
Seems pretty likely Sudo Mesh and PON has connections to some people who
tried to be a part of the mesh network and ran into landlord problems.
It would really help us if we could quantify some of that before our next
meeting with Oakland City government on March 6.
EFF kindly made a blog and survey sheet for outreach purposes. Could you
get the word out to your memberships?

Solidarity,
Tracy

Hello Sudo Mesh friends,

We also FINALLY mounted our gear on the Internet Archive tower in Richmond! We got a 5Ghz airFiber up on their tower, hooked up to a server we placed in one of their racks down below. We are on our way to get a few gigs of donated bandwidth from the Archive. Woohoo! Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to make that happen. This Tuesday will also be an opportunity to celebrate that. :D
