I don't think they should be near the entrance. If they are, they will get used instead of the ones upstairs... meaning folks who need an accessible computer won't be able to use it. Even if we put that they're reserved for people with disabilities, they'll get used first. I guarantee it. Daniel and I were talking about maybe some sort of appropriate height desk which would be able to fold down and then up and that would have a laptop just permanently mounted to it. The somewhat obscurity of it paired with some signage mentioning that there are plenty of terminals upstairs and to please reserve this for folks who wouldn't otherwise be able to access the other terminals. We have a ton of laptops btw - they're in storage under the stairs in omni. Most of them need keyboard replacements (like $15 I think), but some of them I believe are good to go. Just need someone to set up a mini station. I would imagine it should be cleared with the La Commune folks, although I have a feeling they'd be on board. I don't have a ton of cycles to build anything like that, but I'm wondering if there's a stopgap solution that we could use - maybe just hide one of the laptops somewhere around the La Commune Desk with a notice on it? We could get a few of those steel security cables to tie down laptops. How about we have a few standing desk spots in La Commune, with a security cable long enough for a wheelchair user to put the laptop on their lap? That should somewhat discourage long-term use by people who don't need it. Of course, actually putting a laptop on your lap is not ideal in terms of ergonomics. Maybe we could build a small fold-down desk attached to the wall, and then paint a blue wheelchair symbol on the floor ? I understand. My concern is primarily that folks with low mobility who don't use a wheelchair but can't necessarily go up stairs won't have a terminal if we make it only for wheelchair users.
