Hey,
I want to plan a Sudo Mesh event. I'd like to get folks together, review
all the existing materials and spitball ideas for what we'd like to do with
Sudo Mesh.
I want to be upfront: I know Sudo Mesh was developed by a lot of smart
people through a lot of hard work, and I don't want to deny them their due
or agency over this project. So if someone -- anyone -- who has worked on
this before I showed up wants to guide the next steps, I would love that.
To start with, I'm wondering how many people are seeing this message? If
you see this and are interested in getting involved or getting reinvolved,
please speak up.

hi! I'm interested, I'm on the list, I might not be in town 3/8 and I can
let you know if I can join virtually when we get closer to the day.
I imagine it would be good to checkin with Camber, jenny et al first as

Hello All,
I have been watching the rise and fall of mesh networks over a decade. I
worked on community wireless in DC with Commotion Mesh. The OpenWRT mesh
stuff was moved to the ham bands under the name Amateur Radio Emergency
Data Network (AREDN). It has been under development for 8 years but still
doesn't work very well.
I took a closer look

problem is OpenWRT CSMA-RTS/CTS. The TLDR is don't throw away your COTS
radio SW until you understand what it does. I spoke with Phil Kern, the
inventor of CSMA-RTS/CTS and he wasn't surprised by my results. If you
have some sudomesh nodes you can repeat my experiments to show that it
really is a problem.
Mesh is implemented on MikroTek using their proprietary radio. You could
do this FOSS but need a better MAC for a network foundation.
I'm happy to lend a hand where I can, but have a lot on my plate.

The goal of this meeting is to explore the level of interest and technical
knowledge and determine what further steps make sense. Some example
outcomes:
1) A small handful of people decide that they have the interest, time, and
technical background to perform a basic demonstration of the technology,
with fairly clear goals and a timeline. Someone agrees to act as project
lead, and a few other people offer to take responsibility for specific
functions of the tech demonstration discussed, with a plan to meet back in
two weeks or something.
2) During the conversation someone suggests a thematically similar project
that is more accessible or appealing, and we all join up with this other
project organized around similar topics.
3) We all have a nice time, but conclude that there isn't sufficient
interest to pursue anything specific. We make no follow-up plans, but at
least we've met one another, and we can always reach out over this mailing
list to pick back up with this when our circumstances (time, interest,
technical confidence) change.
Obviously, that's not an exhaustive list of all possibilities, but I think
it captures the goals that I have in mind. It's fairly open-ended right
now. If anyone wants to suggest a different set of goals or approach, I'm
totally down for that.
Also, currently it looks like Wednesday the 29th is the best time for the
most people. Although if anyone here wants to meet up at any of the other
times (or any other times at all), go for it.

Hey everyone. Sorry I didn't see this thread until now. I had misconfigured
my email filtering.
The weekly sudo mesh meeting has traditionally happened on Tuesday evenings
at the same time as sudo room hardware hacknight. We never officially
announced a resumption of meetings after the pandemic but either me or
Camber have been present at sudo room most Tuesdays from around 7:30 pm and
I will be there this coming Tuesday and happy to update people on what's
going on with the various sudo mesh projects. Unfortunately myself and
Jenny will both be unable to attend the next few Tuesdays after that but
will be back for the April 11th meeting. I've reached out to Camber to see
if he can make it on the dates in between.
We used to have a monthly "open to newbies" meeting that is more publicly
announced and it might be about time to restart that, but it might be
better to push it until April 11th also because it'd be nice to do some
direct outreach to all the members of sudo mesh to see who might not be
monitoring this list very carefully.
Of course if people want to meet up and hack on mesh stuff in the meantime
and use this list to schedule it, then that's fine. It's just very likely
that none of the sudo mesh members will be there after this Tuesday and
until April 11th.
For those just tuning in I should clarify that sudo mesh has long since
transitioned from a sudo room project to being its own independent
non-profit organization (501c3) and big shoutout to Jenny for taking care
of all the paperwork, insurance and paying of bills for the past several
years!
We are currently drafting a post-pandemic update/newsletter outlining our
activities since 2020 and some next steps / upcoming projects we'd love to
get new folks involved with!

I hope I didn't ruffle your feathers. The honest answer is that I've been
trying to reach you or one of the other folks from Sudo mesh for a few
months, and since it wasn't working I got this idea based on Cunningham's
law:

I figured that if I just started making plans it would probably get back to
someone in Sudo Mesh and they'd reach out. And it worked!
I hope you'll all forgive a bit of mischief in exchange for getting folks
together and warming things up a bit. With that, I am relieved to be free
of any further planning duties. I am still genuinely interested in
participating (in a very passive role!)

I hope this isn't seen as hostile, but I think it's healthy -- especially
in open source development projects -- to just communicate openly and
honestly.
There are people who are interested in learning about distributed mesh
networks like Sudo Mesh, however Sudo Mesh is at this point an inactive
project. I think the simplest way forward is to find a meeting time that
works for as many people who are interested and then meet to share ideas
and learn.
I understand that the last time I tried to do this I hurt your feelings
Marc. I'd like to ask for your guidance on how best to do this again in a
way that respects your contributions. May I schedule a meeting so new
people can meet and discuss this project? We'd love to have you present or
leading, but if you don't have the time or are otherwise unable it would be
very appreciated if you would cooperate with others working on this project
without obstruction.
