So a friend of mine knows a guy in the Berkeley Hills who is real nice.
I talked with him on the phone and suggested that he let us put up a tower
at his house, and use it for the mesh network, and give him free internet.
He said that sounds great but cautioned that his view is to the northwest.
His address is 1130 sterling ave, berkeley if you want to look at it on a
topographic map or even visit. If you want to visit, let me know and i'll
call him and coordinate a date when we can go over there. He owns his
house and is a nice guy.
There is a telescoping 90-foot tower in my driveway. I paid $100 for it
and Marc paid $45 in gasoline to go get it, and I don't think I have a
place to put it. If the mesh group wants to buy the tower and put it up
somewhere, for example at Charlie's place, that would work fine.

I would like to know how discrete these towers are.
I live in a cottage with a flat roof around 2 blocks from Ashby Bart.
There's also a bit of space behind it. The cottage is behind a main house,
off the street, and the area is gated, so it is very private.
I currently have my own Internet prepaid for a year - I'm just a big fan of
the mesh idea. You haven't really seen me yet because I had a big health
crisis a week and a half ago - if you want to joke about it, I almost died
trying to make my point to Berkeley City Council. XD (Don't worry, I'm fine
now,)
Anyway, I think access to the Internet is one of the most important things
for low income people to have after housing and food, and I would like to
enable it in South/West Berkeley. The place I have might be perfect
stashing tower. If it doesn't aesthetically harm the property and it's
nothing that could get him in legal trouble, I don't the landlord would
care. He lives in India and lets the tenants do just about anything they
want.

Hi Elisa,
The mast is 90 ft tall and I believe requires 4(?) guy wires to be secured
in a certain radius. I wouldn't say it's likely to be discrete, per se, but
they are surprisingly common around Oakland and Berkeley. Normally you
don't even really notice them until you start looking for them. That being
said, neighbors or landlords might not feel the same way.
Having a tower around ashby bart would be pretty fantastic. At that
location and height we could really do some cool things. There's still a
bit of an issue of getting service to that mount itself, but it's something
that can very much be solved once we start to have some infrastructure on
the ground to work with.
Yeah if Mitar is around you should totally have him come check it out.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that a view from the Berkeley hills to the NW
will help us much. :-( We've been looking into uplinks and while we
shouldn't rule it out, it seems unlikely that we will find anything that
way.
There is some chance that the internet archive folks would be interested if
he has a view across the bay to SF though?

it looks to me like he may be near the summit, though the topomap is not
clear on this. did i mention the 100foot tower? maybe you can see all
around with it.

March 1st might work. I don't think we need much of a mast, but what to
attach it to will require a little thought. There are solar panels with a
nice support frame that should be a good mounting point, but we need to
extend the frame horizontally a bit.
