We’re building a community wireless mesh network! The first three Thursdays of the month are open hacknights – we stay focused! Last Thursdays of the month are general orientation meetings for new volunteers.

A wireless mesh network is a network where each computer acts as a relay to other computers, such that a network can stretch to cover entire cities. Our goal is to create a wireless mesh network that is owned and operated by the community.

Want to help create an alternate means of digital communication that isn’t governed by for-profit internet service providers? Join us for the mesh hacknight!

We have crowdfunded the purchase of our first 100+ routers and are preparing to deploy the first nodes in Oakland. We need people with both technical and non-technical backgrounds to help with everything from local community involvement and crowdfunding to mounting wifi routers on buildings and developing software!

“Open, Free and Neutral Network Internet for everybody” — https://guifi.net

Join this presentation / workshop with guifi-netters Griselda and Al to learn more about guifi.net and pick up some lessons to improve peoplesopen.net based on the lessons they have learned in Catalonia! Their network has over 25,000 mesh nodes in operation, woah!

They’re going to speak about guifi.net itself and a data center they’re building on core of guifi.net optic fiber: http://marsupi.org/barrahome/en/

This new project is a cooperative data center for the people. It is based on data that can be accessible 100% across free community mesh network managed by the people, without NSA surveillance (and also, of course, accessible in the whole internet). So here we’re getting in touch with projects that want to collaborate in making it real hosting here.
