Happy Black History Month from Oakland at your favorite hackerspace! In these times learning about African-American and other brown people’s history sadly feels like an act of defiance. Embrace it if you want to save the world!

Oakland is “Awake”

We’ll try to also promote interesting events going on in Oakland this month as this is the birthplace of the Black Panthers, and a community famous for being “awake” to the realities of history and racism in the face of widespread ignorance and oppression.
We’ll be exploring black pioneers of Silicon Valley and open source such as Roy Clay: the Black Godfather of Silicon Valley who helped open the doors for many people of color to get into tech (featured here in an NBC Bay Area video) and Brian Fox, champion of open source and creator of Bash! si

Even better, you can suggest meetups for your group after coming to meet us during one of our popular nights, the Tuesday hardware hack night or the Monday women & non-binary hack night. We had a new group come in and hold an in-person linux unplugged podcast listening party!
The events have been looking pretty monotonous lately. We’ll spice them up! New Ideas are welcome as well.
New Ideas?
We were brainstorming in January, and there’s more to come. What’s really nice is that our nights tend to be very informal without a lot of speeches and notes… but if you want to do the formal speech thing, feel free to go ahead! We’ve found that it’s fun to practice giving a talk in front of an audience before going into a more formal situation!
What’s great is we have tons of whiteboards as well!
