Nothing surprising about the fact that the Cable industry is taking
advantage of the commons (unregulated spectrum) to increase the value of
their privately owned assets. But it's probably a good idea for us to pay
attention to what they're doing, as it will have a lot of implications for
how people connect to wireless networks in the future. Specifically, Cable
is investing heavily in the Hotspot 2.0 standard
(
802.11u<http://a030f85c1e25003d7609-b98377aee968aad08453374eb1df3398.r40…)f>).
Hotspot 2.0 creates a cellular-roaming like experience on mobile devices,
allowing the process of selecting appropriate networks and providing
necessary credentials to happen in the background, without any input from
users. Pretty soon (1-2 years away I'd guess), Cable companies will likely
become an MVNO and their customers phones will automatically connect to any
Cable wifi hotspot.
This isn't something we need to think about right now, but it's definitely
worth keeping an eye on. If the 802.11u standard gets widely adopted, it'll
change the way the average person connects to WiFi networks. If you want to
learn more about Hotspot 2.0, here's a good article about it:

Interesting topic, and well written article -- thanks much for sharing,
Thomas!
I think the kind of language the reporter uses here is a good example of
how to effectively talk to a general audience about mesh and related
concepts...

Hey all,
I've been lurking on this list for little a while - I love the progress
you're making! I ran across this article recently which I thought you'd
find interesting. Classic monopoly behavior (bundling) from Comcast:
