I have scheduled an installation appointment for Tuesday February 14th at 2PM,
and I'll be at the building to facilitate this process.
Since I only heard back from one person about my proposal, and our present ISP
charges us like $155/mo and I am confident that Monkeybrains will charge us
less for better service (and even more aligned politics than LMI/AT&T) I
expect that unless Monkeybrains is unable to connect us (it's all wireless
point-to-point links) we will be switching over to them after the install.

Does anyone know who we have internet service with now, how much we pay, and
whether there's a penalty for cancelling after we get service with

New subject: [sudo-discuss] Re: [omni-events] changing our internet to Monkeybrains
Hi all,
It seems important to know the costs before moving forward.
Also, I believe there were a few proposals on the table from my earlier
thread about creating a point to point link?
One was to just have one of the neighbors get sonic/lmi fiber and shoot to
them.
The other was to share internet with the long haul, just shoot it down
shattuck, which would greatly support that struggling space that has the
gigabit LMI service but it's a strain on the budget for us (LH).
Also, I remember being told that LMI is much preferred to Sonic due to its
policies around resharing internet. I would want to know what Monkeybrains
policy is, it feels contingent to ensure all decisions made don't impact
the Mesh or other projects.
I'd like to suggest investigating these options before moving forward. I
would be interested in being in any conversations, installs, etc.

From a mounted mast, we can't hit anything north of the 24/580 bridge iirc
LMI is preferred due to being solar-powered. They have the same
reseller/sharing terms as Sonic.
Monkeybrains would be cool if we can get it :) Omni is unfortunately
surrounded by highways and condos, hence not being the hub of WiFi we'd
love it to be...

Hi Ajay,
Monkeybrains will be less than half the price of what we're paying now,
we're getting a special deal. Also we can expect a gigabit connection,
although we won't know for sure until installation tomorrow.
You're right that we were in talks with the neighbors about getting a
point-to-point and sharing a fiber connection to EBDCR (I was emailing with
them directly) but fortunately we didn't move forward with that, because
this is much better. I just didn't realize until last week that
Monkeybrains had expanded their coverage zone to include Omni Commons.
About Long Haul, there's no way we could beam a signal a mile up Shattuck
just because of simple physics, but of course we're aligned politically.
Thankfully, so is Monkeybrains which would likely provide them with great
service if their building is in their coverage zone. Also I understand
that Long Haul is in the process of having to find another place while
their land trust renovates the property (after which they're invited back)
but I don't know the details.
As for Monkeybrain's policy around resharing, you're welcome to look into
it but it's at least as liberal as LMI, probably better in a lot of ways.
Sorry the conversation hasn't been more public, but I have reported to the
list as much as I could and you're invited to come to the installation
tomorrow (tuesday) at 2PM on the roof of omni.
