Projects
- Read (and contribute to) our list of projects to see (and inform) what kinds of projects we will be able to do in this space! You can also see projects we've featured on our website.
Plan
The plan is composed of: goals (early mission/vision), constraints, and approaches.
Goals
- To create a creative community hacker space in the East Bay Area near San Francisco, CA, specifically in Oakland, CA.
- Establishing a platform and space committed to
- Citizen science
- Non-technical (humanities, social science, arts, crafts, all the squishy stuff!) and technical knowledge (including transitions and bridges between the two)
- Non-technical knowledge includes but is not limited to expertise in fields or disciplines that can be largely independent of technology. Also includes non-academic realms of knowledge.
- Digital/Online Citizenship
- ...to do something more with digital and network technology
- Environmental sustainability
- Education and mentorship
- Community engagement
- Public access
For examples, check out our list of potential projects or read about ones we've shared on our website.
Constraints
- BART train proximity and disability access are crucial location constraints.
- Areas of preferred location are: Temescal, Downtown, Lake Merritt, and West Oakland areas.
- Open to consider warehouse spaces and office spaces.
- Business address, to get chemicals, supplies, etc.
- There are a few hackerspaces in the East Bay, some tied to Maker Culture, but there are various virtual and software emphases. Existent spaces:
- Ace Monster Toys - cool hackerspace with lots of tools and infrastructure. Definitely friends in the East Bay!
- The Crucible
- Ponoko
- Tech Liminal (technology salon / coworking space; hosts Make:SF meetups)
- Who is NIMBY space?
- Who is The Holdout? (related to Occupy Oakland)
- 2313 San Pablo Big green building (tag: no set feature)
- Opportunity for "Collectives" to apply to share the space.
- Who is Blue Door Co-working Space?
Approaches
- Build a community and group of members, grow our ideas together, and open a space over the next 6 mo. - 1 year.
- Create online presence and communications infrastructure
- Utilize our website and blog more effectively!
- Beg our artsy friends to fulfill our design needs.
- Make a video for crowd-funding opportunities
- Hold weekly meetup / salon.
- Collect membership dues to start building a budget as a Voluntary [membership] Association.
- Apply to relevant grants, fellowships, and various funding opportunities.
