We’re pushing for more art studio vibes in our media lab / sewing / hardware hack night. A lot of folks are musicians, painters, and even comic book artist on the side while working and breathing tech, and we’d like to push more of that to the surface!
The Media lab which runs 2pm-11??? at night initially started with a focus on sewing, then grew into a silkscreen printing studio and even has had looms for weaving fabric. With some changes we have recently had more open space, and we were encouraged to draw and paint back there.
CeCe from Media Lab pointed out that fabrics can be treated as a kind of painting. For thousands of years tapestries have been hung on walls of all cultures, commemorating everything from lives of rulers to the bloody colonization of an island nation (hello Bayex Tapestry).
We took the new artwork up to the hardware hack night. Who knows what kind of mischief will ensue? We can attach LED lights to this thing, or turn it into a laser art show. We also showed off the embroidery logo of SudoRoom that CeCe made with her machines.
In the upcoming weeks we’re going to be visiting more museums and even the San Francisco Open Artists studio. We’d love for more starving artists to visit our space, use our resources, and contribute to the vibe. We aren’t just a STEM hackerspace – for us it’s the arts all the way, man!
