We continue our Nollywood inspiration by following the Critics Company, a young group of up and coming science fiction filmmakers. As you can tell from the attached documentaries, these super young kids had fun making science fiction films with their phone cameras. They braved power outages and a lack of resources with resourcefulness, looking up how to do special effects on YouTube and Wikipedia. The group saved up money for several weeks to buy their first green screen!
The Critics Company started posting their short science fiction videos online and massed a large following: Here’s a short excerpt from Africa News:

The kids’ films went viral, and they got the attention of Nollywood filmmakers, who helped publicize their movies. This led to lots of mentorship and a crowdfunding round that helped them buy computers. A couple years later they have their own studio and are making regular films, even attracting mentorship from heavyweights like JJ Abrams in Hollywood.
As we mentioned, these kids are great inspiration! If you are working on hardware hack night, what can you do to enable more cool young filmmakers or indie filmmakers who want to film a cool new point of view?
