Ideally, the backs of the cards would be a sticker and the business card
would just be plain after the sticker is removed. I have to talk to the
printers to see if they can do that at a price comparable to the cards, but
I don't see why not, it's almost the same.
One of my primary motivations for creating the cards is because whenever I
talk to people about the network we're developing, they say something like
"yeah, I heard about a free internet thing." When really I would rather it
be known as People's Open Network instead an idea that they heard about
from somebody.
Secondly, if people use business cards like me, they hold onto them and
save them for later. A card with a logo or event on them, I just throw
those out. If we compare impressions and clicks to the cost of a business
card, it's more effective because they're going to be seen again and again
by that person. It's more likely they're going to remember the name and be
able to call upon it because of the association they made with one of us.
Also, I don't want to compare what we're doing to a start-up, because I
don't feel that's appropriate, but that's how it's seen by people in the
bay area and having a cards comes off as more developed than every other
idea.
And last but not least, the idea is to provide cards to people by the group
to those who have been attending seven or eight of the last ten meetings.
Maybe or less demanding than that, but it gives more inventive to
participate at the meetings.

I created a card design that's open to feedback. Also, as proposed at the
last meeting, I think we should provide cards to people who have been
working the mesh and meet some minimum attendance to the meetings. The
front and backs of these cards adhere to the design principles of the group
and meet the printer's requirements.
I could incorporate our groups mesh logo on the front of the card, but I
couldn't find a vector-based one. The reason I would be less inclined to
include it would be not to confuse people when we really just want to give
our contact information and spread the word about the network. In regard to
titles, I think people should choose something that describes what they do
or will do as the network develops (installing nodes, workshops, software
development, etc) and give the users confidence in adopting it.
Take care,
Jeremy

Starting off these notes with an exciting excerpt from the ircz :D
Day changed to 07 Feb 2014
00:04 < juul> WE JUST SUCCESSFULLY CONFIGURED THE FIRST WORKING NODE
00:04 < juul> THE SYSTEM IS WORKING
00:04 < juul> ONLY TWO "SHOWSTOPPING BUGS LEFT":
00:05 < juul> * sticker printing
00:05 < juul> * upstream bandwidth limiting
00:08 < thundara> juul: Cool, can an outsider get / build the firmware yet?
00:11 < jerkey> yay!!!!!!!!
00:17 < juul> thundara: yeah, but we need to spend a couple of days going
through and documenting better
00:18 < juul> the idea is that you flash the standard sudo mesh firmware,
then use the node-configurator to set up the node
00:20 < juul> so, in very brief: get the openwrt-firmware repo from
sudomesh github, run prepare script, run build script, flash resulting
firmware (jffs version) onto your atheros node (only tested on picostation
2 hp and bullet 2 hp so far), then get the node-configurator from our git
repo and follow the instructions in the readme
00:20 < juul> those instructions may well be a bit lacking still

A proposed business card design for the mesh team. Reply to this thread
with your (dis)approval and preferred title ;)
One idea would be to make them front and back, with more general info about
the People's Open Network on the other side.

Hi Folks,
I'm not feeling particularly well, so I don't think I'm going to bike
over tonight. Barring some significant change in circumstances, I think
I'll be participating on IRC and etherpad instead. I've been working on
finishing the splash page/fake captive portal code so maybe I'll be able
to focus more on that while I'm here.
Also, I'll obviously not be making the networking study group. I don't
imagine that will be particularly disappointing to anyone, but if it is,
I'm sorry and I'm more than happy to chat on IRC about it.

Nothing surprising about the fact that the Cable industry is taking
advantage of the commons (unregulated spectrum) to increase the value of
their privately owned assets. But it's probably a good idea for us to pay
attention to what they're doing, as it will have a lot of implications for
how people connect to wireless networks in the future. Specifically, Cable
is investing heavily in the Hotspot 2.0 standard
(802.11u<http://a030f85c1e25003d7609-b98377aee968aad08453374eb1df3398.r40.cf2.rackcd…>).
Hotspot 2.0 creates a cellular-roaming like experience on mobile devices,
allowing the process of selecting appropriate networks and providing
necessary credentials to happen in the background, without any input from
users. Pretty soon (1-2 years away I'd guess), Cable companies will likely
become an MVNO and their customers phones will automatically connect to any
Cable wifi hotspot.
This isn't something we need to think about right now, but it's definitely
worth keeping an eye on. If the 802.11u standard gets widely adopted, it'll
change the way the average person connects to WiFi networks. If you want to
learn more about Hotspot 2.0, here's a good article about it:

Hey all,
I've been lurking on this list for little a while - I love the progress
you're making! I ran across this article recently which I thought you'd
find interesting. Classic monopoly behavior (bundling) from Comcast:
