The news service on social justice and sustainable development
------------------------------------------------------------------------
#374 — 18 May 2023
This week we want to highlight the launch of our new series on how some
APC members see the future of circular economies of digital devices
playing out. We also have a powerful account of how activists in Korea
just won an epic nine-year-long privacy case against Google, as well as
the launch of five manuals to support community networks on key issues
such as solar energy and circular economies. And we have a new
research subgrant call for proposals, as well as two job postings!

“The bottom line is to understand that linearity and growth will not go
together”: Introducing "Our Circular Future", a series on the future of
circular economies
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=16997&qid=1882416>
In this new series, we reconnect with members who contributed to
our guide on the circular economy of digital devices, this time
about their vision for the future of these economies. In part one, we
speak with CITAD about what is needed in the right to repair
movement, emerging trends and lessons learned and missed.
ADVOCATING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS ONLINE
Protecting civil rights against corporate surveillance in South Korea
<https://crm.apc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=16998&qid=1882416>
Google has been giving access to users' personal information to the US
government under the latter's PRISM programme. In 2014, six activists
from various organisations, including APC member Korean Progressive
Network Jinbonet, took the tech giant to court, demanding they be given
access to the information that Google holds on them. Nine years
later, they finally won in the Supreme Court.

Hi there,
It's been a while since I've chimed in here. For those who don't know me, I
used to be involved in Sudo Mesh/People's Open between 2017-2020 until the
pandemic kind of slowed everything down.
I'm writing because I'm one of the core organizers of DWeb Camp, an event
organized by the Internet Archive about building a better, more
decentralized web. This year it's happening for the third time this June
21-25, 2023 in Mendocino at Camp Navarro: https://dwebcamp.org/
We've always had a local mesh network component to the event, but this
time, we're doing something different. We're shutting off the Internet on
the third and final full day of camp on Saturday. We're calling that day
Tomorrow, and we're going to use the opportunity to test out locally hosted
p2p apps and spend the day doing emergent sessions. We're also planning a
whole LARP-y narrative around *why* the Internet is going to be shut off.
More info here: https://dwebcamp.org/tomorrow/
I'm telling you all this because I have two asks of Sudo Mesh folks:
1 - Local Network Build Volunteers -- We're looking for two people who can
help us build the mesh network there at Camp and help us test it and
maintain it through the event. We can offer a free ticket to the event to
these volunteers in exchange (you would need to self-camp). Please note
that we are looking for people who have some networking hardware/software
experience.
If you're interested, please email me at mai(a)archive.org (also cc'd on this
email) with information about yourself and your experience.
2 - Network Equipment -- We do have some network gear, and our main network
stewards (Esther and Cody, cc'd) are coming from Seattle Mesh with some of
theirs too. However, it would be extremely helpful if we could borrow some
things from the mesh cage at Sudo Room -- assuming some of it is still
there...!
Since I've been out of the loop, I'm not sure who to talk to or people who
would make the decision about this kind of thing, so if anyone can point me
in their direction, please do!
Thanks all! Hope to hear from you soon.
Warmly,
Mai

Hi all,
I'm sharing this info in case other communities outside of Newport Wireless
Mesh may find it useful. The Aruba AP175 is a high-power, stable,
electrically protected outdoor access point that I recently ported to
OpenWrt, and I hope other communities might get good use out of it. It's
old hardware, but very available, and for multiple reasons will likely
enjoy long-term supportability (ath9k, 128M RAM / 16M NOR).
Newport Wireless Mesh will continue to use Aruba AP175s that I have
personally flashed.
Van Tech Corner (THANK YOU, VAN!) did a video explaining how, given an
Aruba AP175 in unknown state, we can use a Raspberry Pi or CH341A and
16-pin Pomona chip clip to reflash the Aruba AP175 to a custom U-Boot
compatible with OpenWrt 23 and onwards:

Hi David!
The mesh project is in the process of starting up again! You can join the
list (or view the archives) here:
https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/mesh.sudoroom.org/
Sudoroom has an open-house hack night every Tuesday, a meeting/gathering
almost every wednesday evening, and Software Thursdays most weeks.
Hopefully the mesh project will start having meetings too. I recommend
joining the mesh list (I see you already joined sudo-discuss) and checking out
the mesh list archives, linked above.

I'm definitely up for helping out with Sudo Mesh, though to be frank I don't know that much about the topic in terms of expertise. I'm happy to be an extra pair of hands, and read up on anything I need to get caught up.

Monkeybrains has expanded their coverage a lot since we last checked, and they
believe they can hit one of their many uplink sites from our roof, and we'll
find out tomorrow! You should come hang out on the roof with us!!!!!!
Monkeybrains is also solar-powered (at least the Oakland facility) AND most of
their vehicles are electric, so I'm guessing they're more eco-friendly than
LMI :)
and don't forget, LMI is just reselling AT&T...we are literally connected to
the deathstar right now :(
cross your fingers for the install tomorrow!

I have scheduled an installation appointment for Tuesday February 14th at 2PM,
and I'll be at the building to facilitate this process.
Since I only heard back from one person about my proposal, and our present ISP
charges us like $155/mo and I am confident that Monkeybrains will charge us
less for better service (and even more aligned politics than LMI/AT&T) I
expect that unless Monkeybrains is unable to connect us (it's all wireless
point-to-point links) we will be switching over to them after the install.
If you're interested in seeing how this works, let me know or just show up!

Briar <https://briarproject.org/> and [potentially] CENO Browser
<https://censorship.no/>, your responsibilities would include
identifying, prototyping and documenting methods for an iOS app to
achieve the following goals:
* Discover and connect to nearby peers (iOS and Android) without
needing internet access (e.g. Bluetooth, local multicast);
* Investigate use of mDNS and DNS-SD on iOS and its interoperability
with Android;
* Investigate options for the app to run in the background under
various networking conditions;
* Sharing application data as files with other iOS applications.
Please share with your networks and feel free to email me privately if
you have any questions. eQ is a remote-first organization. Please apply
via the links above.
