Sudo Room is an open, non-hierarchical, collaborative community of humans, including tech developers, citizen scientists, activists, artists--and all combinations in between and beyond!--who are interested in and working towards social change. Our goal is to create the first inclusive, dedicated hackerspace in downtown Oakland, so that ideas and projects in areas such as citizen science, digital/online citizenship and literacy, environmental sustainability, community engagement, and government transparency may be exchanged and grow.
Sudo Room is committed to access, transparency, and public/social good. Sudoers have a great diversity of interests and we emphasize respect and solidarity among ourselves and with others.
Read and Inform a potential methodology for Sudo Room.

Plan
Current Critical Momentum
We have made headway with:
The legacy (needs updating) plan below is composed of: goals (early mission/vision), constraints, and approaches.
Next Steps
As per discussions and polling, we are moving toward these steps:
- May 30th - Get bank account
- June 6th - Expand membership, get a sense of paying members
- June 13th - Get first payment
- July 1 - Rent for Space
Research
- Conduct research on other hackerspaces, exploring their models of community, governance and funding.
- Create a list of open knowledge ecosystem organizations in the Bay Area.
- Examine potential tax structures
Needs to be Updated
Goals
- To create a creative community hacker space in the East Bay Area, specifically in Oakland, CA.
- Establish a platform and space committed to:
- Citizen science
- Non-technical (humanities, social science, the environment/ environmental justice, arts, crafts, all the squishy stuff!) and technical knowledge (including transitions and bridges between the two)
- Non-technical knowledge includes but is not limited to expertise in fields or disciplines that can be largely independent of technology. Also includes non-academic realms of knowledge.
- Digital/Online Citizenship
- ...to do something more with digital and network technology
- Environmental sustainability
- Education and mentorship
- Community engagement
- Public access
- To become a center for active hacking projects but also a destination where speakers on the areas listed above may be hosted, and where folks may go for skill sharing classes
For examples, check out our list of potential projects or read about ones we've shared on our website.
Towards Opening a Space: Considerations
- BART train proximity and disability access are crucial location constraints.
- Areas of preferred location are: Temescal, Downtown, Lake Merritt, and West Oakland areas.
- Open to consider warehouse spaces and office spaces.
- Business address, to get chemicals, supplies, etc.
- There are a few hackerspaces in the East Bay, some tied to Maker Culture, but there are various virtual and software emphases. Existent spaces:
- Ace Monster Toys - cool hackerspace with lots of tools and infrastructure. Definitely friends in the East Bay!
- The Crucible
- Ponoko
- Tech Liminal (technology salon / coworking space; hosts Make:SF meetups) Tech Liminal and Sudo Room
- Who is NIMBY space?
- Who is The Holdout? (related to Occupy Oakland)
- 2313 San Pablo Big green building (tag: no set feature)
- Opportunity for "Collectives" to apply to share the space.
- Who is Blue Door Co-working Space?
Approaches
- Build a community and group of members, grow our ideas together, and open a space before the end of 2012.
- Create online presence and communications infrastructure
- Utilize our website and blog more effectively!
- Beg our artsy friends to fulfill our design needs.
- Make a video for crowd-funding opportunities
- Hold weekly meetup / salon.
- Collect membership dues to start building a budget as a Voluntary [membership] Association.
- Apply to relevant grants, fellowships, and various funding opportunities.
Projects
- Read (and contribute to) our list of projects to see (and inform) what kinds of projects we will be able to do in this space! You can also see projects we've featured on our website.
