I just want to bump this thread and see if anyone is available to work on the
physical aspects of the door opener I describe below, and as shown in this
diagram:

I am willing to do the electronics part of it and make it work with our
existing system, but I would like others to help with the building of a bracket
to hold the motor in place over the door, and the woodwork and nuts&bolts of
making the 2x2 stick with steel cable attached to it.

the problem is that the way our card reader is currently configured makes it
impossible to differentiate between good reads of readable cards, and the
myriad ways the card reader says "I WAS UNABLE TO READ THAT CARD PROPERLY"
because the software takes the KEYBOARD SCAN CODES sent by the reader (because
it pretends to be a keyboard) and HASHED THE SCAN CODES SEQUENCE through a
trapdoor algorithm... so we have no way to know what was scanned.
this means that many people had the door code equivalent of "CARD READ ERROR"
which meant that anyone could swipe any card in the reader, in a way where it
would say "CARD READ ERROR" or whatever, and get the door open.
we hacked a kludge into the software a while ago that would count the number of
keyboard scan codes that came from the card reader, before they go through the
trapdoor algorithm, and just throw out anything shorter than 100 characters,
which presumably includes the error codes.
i have no idea how your card could have been mangled in a way that it's still
reading (which means its checksum is intact) but that it's different from
before. I think it means that the present reading of your car is an error code
(that's longer than 100 bytes i guess)
don't worry, it's not your problem. we'll eventually figure out a way to fix
it i guess. we're certainly going to add an RFID system, hopefully with a
more sustainable design, and maybe someday phase out the magstripe cards
entirely? I don't know.

so I don't know what happened before I arrived, except that yar said
"i fixed it by plugging it in" and I don't know what exactly that means, and i
would like to know exactly.
anyway, when I got there the beaglebone black was somehow powered off (no LEDS)
but it had 5v being supplied to it. I have no idea what caused that.
i power cycled the beaglebone black AND the USB hub's power source (which is
separate) and then everything worked. Someone should install a button in the
cabinet to do a reset like that. for some reason, when the BBB and USB hub are
not both power cycled, it can lead to a situation where the doorjam program
doesn't connect to the magstripe reader and everyone is unhappy.

i think the entrance to sudo/ccl should have a door before we bother putting a
card reader.
the door that had been there was removed, because it swung inwards, which is
unacceptable for an emergency exit. The door needs to be re-installed with the
hinges swinging outward, so that in case an emergency happens in sudo/ccl
people can just flood outward.
after the door is installed that way, with a panic bar (not a regular doorknob)
we can install a card reader.

Hey Jake, et al., Here is a link to the photos of what's up. The camera to
the door is also not working. If you swipe your card, the door doesn't
open, and it looks like someone hacked it- opened it up and (maybe) fucked
with the wires. I am sending the link to photos because folks with riseup
won't receive the images. Do we have metal keys we can copy? Kazoo
