So far I have 4 of the Linksys routers running HSMM. Two are running
PersonalTelco which don't seem to speak ethernet. I am looking for my
JTAG cables and will try that. Does anyone have a cable know to work with
Linksys? Is there any other ways to unbrick - over the air? Five AP's are
WRAP54Gs and don't run HSMM. Should I just e-waste the WRAP54Gs or return
them to sudoroom?
There is an April 10 meeting of the East Bay Amateur Radio Club in El
Sobrante with a speaker on ham mesh nets. …
[View More]I plan on attending and can
drive others. I will tailgate the routers.
There is varying degrees of interest in the ham community in microwave ham
nets. Cal's radio club has a mesh running HSMM and I believe the NALCO
(North Alemeda County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services) has one.
Some of the EBARC members are interested in getting something going.
I'm not sure about the interest level among the Oakland club (ORCA) though
I'm sure there are at least a few members that would mount their own nodes,
possibly on masts. They also have a repeater with power, etc. on Grizzly
Peak.
I'm a ORCA and EBARC member and could invite someone to speak about
sudomesh at a future meeting if interested. You might get some good help
with development, testing and deployment, especially if you get into
towers.
This is a little long winded but I thought that there are some useful
insights on broadband networking from neighbors:

Sorry for the long post.

I started updating the inventory:

Feel free to add.
Note that I pre-emptively added some gear that has been ordered but not
received.

hullo friends,
so here's an interest intake form for PeoplesOpen.net.
http://goo.gl/forms/hecWHP28QY
any changes?
once we are satisfied with our wordsmithing, we can post it online,
under How to Help. let me know if y'all would like to make any changes.
there is a way to embed the survey on the site, so when we're ready we
can just post the embed code and not just a link :)
once it's live, i can make it so that every time someone fills out the
form a notification goes to info(a)sudomesh.…
[View More]org or to people's email
accounts who are interested. i, for one, am going to just set up a
folder so the responses don't crowd my inbox.
good night,
april

I was thinking about how to make the experience of operating a node really
smooth and engaging, and I thought: What if there was a big button right on
top of the node that you could press and the node would tell help you
troubleshoot?
*press*
<node> I am connected to one other mesh node via my dish antenna on the
roof. I am connected to the Internet via the Internet connection in this
home. I count four clients currently connected to the mesh through me.
--- another home ---
*press*
…
[View More]<node> I am not connected to the mesh. I am not connected to the Internet
but I remember being connected to the Internet only four hours ago. Please
check that a cable is connected to my port labeled "Internet" and that the
other end of the cable is plugged into one of the ports labeled LAN on your
Internet router.
I checked prices on aliexpress and I predict that it would cost about $4
per node plus some work to do this:
Components:
* USB Sound card $1.25 -
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/USB-Sound-Card-7-1-Channel-3D-Audio-Sound-Ca…
* Amplifier: $1.21 -
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1-PCS-Mini-Digital-For-Audio-Amplifier-Board…
* Speaker with case: $0.96 -
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/3-5mm-Audio-Portable-Wired-Multimedia-Speake…
* Button (ok not very big, but best I could find cheap): $0.30 -
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/10pcs-Push-Button-with-Cap-12x12-mm/19150748…
or instead of the speaker and amp, just cut one of these in half and
super-glue it to the top of the node:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Mini-Portable-Hamburger-Speaker-Amplifier-Fo…
For the My Net N600 there's likely a secondary unused USB inside of it
where we can solder the sound card and tap power for the amplifier.
I know this is kinda silly. We probably don't want to be doing this to a
whole bunch of routers, but if we ever do a large enough custom order of
mesh routers (e.g. crowdfunded) it might be cool to add this feature + if
we show it off as something we're working on it could gain us some
attention.
For now I might make a prototype at some point.
For software I'd go with pre-recorded messages that are combined as needed,
since it will sounds _much_ nicer than speech synthesis. You can do 10
minutes of very nice sounding human voice in about 800 kB, so i think we
could fit enough voice samples on there without running out of storage.
fiverr.com is a good source for really inexpensive high quality voice
acting talent.

Hi all,
I'm cool with trying to have the meeting on Tuesday, but can we please
be prompt about our start time? It looks like on Tuesdays I have a
neighborhood meeting that I need to attend regularly and get there by 9
at the very, very latest.
If not, then can we discuss another time to have the general meeting?
How's Mondays?
Thanks, April

I couldn't find the security torx bits. I'll try to find them for Thursday.
Needed them to open the dsl box to reroute the cable in rise above's space.
