This afternoon there was a widely reported internet failure. People
stopped using the SSID "sudoroom" and were instead connecting to a
mysterious orwellian-sounding open network called "cloudtrax".
The root of the problem was: somebody unplugged a random white
3-outlet extension cord under the 3D printer computer. This cord
reaches behind the bookshelf, where it supplies power to a small
ethernet hub. This ethernet hub supplies connectivity to the laptop on
the bookshelf, which happens to run our local DNS server. All DNS
clients are told to use that laptop as their DNS server, which helps
make space.sudo and door.sudoroom.org function inside the space.
Without that laptop being up and connected, typical clients' DNS won't
work, and the internet will appear broken.
It would seem we have too many points of failure. For now I am going
to label this extension cord as "do not unplug: breaks internet".
hey all,
lost track of the pending domain expiration, it ended but I already renewed
it, unfortunately on godaddy still. site may be inaccessible for up to 24
hours.

Another tradeoff I just realized is that two SSL sites means we either
need to buy additional IPs from Linode ($1/month) or use SNI which
could break support for very old browsers (IE on XP, Android 2.x
builtin).
Call me paranoid but I really wouldn't advise wordpress without SSL though.

Their current site is this: https://oaklandmakerspace.wordpress.com/
IIRC, its biggest limitation is that wordpress.com doesn't let you
install random plugins. Sudoroom already is running one wordpress, it
would be mostly trivial to add another one. Action items as I see
them:
- acquire domain name (e.g. lolspace.org)
- acquire SSL cert (wordpress without SSL is dangerous)
- decide on a file permissions policy. do they need a separate shell
account or should it just share file permissions with sudoroom.org?
(This determines how wordpress updates will work, and either has
tradeoffs)
Hi Praveen! Hi Carmen!
Sorry for not getting back to you last night - I'm on a retreat with the
Open Garden team up in Tahoe.
I would love to help you! Unfortunately, my server is having serious space
issues related to some mysql database bloat that I need to resolve, and it
will probably not be easy.
An alternative: We could host it on the sudoroom.org Linode, perhaps?
CC'ing the sudo-sys list to see if that would work - in particular, Jordan
it seems is the most savvy to this server's particular requirements.
Sudo-sys recipients, please reply-all so Praveen and Carmen get your
replies :)
