The gateway has been replaced with a desktop computer sitting on its
side in the rack on top of the multi-hd storage server. Note that this
is super janky since the two PCI network cards can't be mounted
properly in the somewhat-smaller-than-standard case.
We added two network cards and were planning to use the built-in card
as well, but currently the built-in card is not used and the private
network is down. There are two reasons:
* The switch used for the private network had one of its fans die and
I turned it off until we can replace the fan so it won't overheat
* The built-in network card appears to need firmware which I'm not
going to bother with until the fan on the private network switch is
replaced
Also, we might get a new server rather than using this old desktop machine.
The new computer is using the old harddrive. I changed the following
files due to the different names of the network interfaces:
/etc/network/interfaces
/etc/default/isc-dhcp-server
/etc/iptables/rules.v4
/etc/iptables/rules.v6
You can find backups of the files from before my changes at the same
paths with .old added (for the parent dir for /etc/iptables)

For the switch with the broken fan Ian hacked a replacement which is
strapped to the outside of the case.
I ordered some higher-quality (ball-bearring) replacements.
They are Delta FFB0412SHN-BF00 and I got three for $8 shipped so we
can swap out others as they fail.
For future reference if you need to order more they are pretty
expensive from digi-key, but if you just search for FFB0412SHN on ebay
and look for a three-pin model you will probably be good, though
there's a chance you'll end up getting one where the third pin is a
"locked rotor sensor" rather than a tachometer but those are pretty
non-standard so it's unlikely.

I just plugged the switch back in to get space.local and others back
online. Heatwave's over in a few hours, I think it'll be fine.
I would like new low-power hardware to replace saros, and also to
replace space.local, which is overprovisioned and running Ubuntu 14.04
(EOL).

I like low power but I feel like we need something that can handle a
wireguard tunnel at 1 Gbps since we'll be upgrading and we should
really be piping everything through a non-logging VPN.
I don't think those two requirements are mutually exclusive nowadays.

I looked at a bunch of single board computers with 3+ gigabit ethernet

Agreed that board + case + psu combo is better, unless somebody here
feels like spending a whole day putting everything together and
troubleshooting. Looks like neither option includes ram, which adds
~$50.
I would like to see actual benchmarks on the how much watts/hz a
gigabit wireguard connection would actually need.
We should also talk about the pros/cons of an external VPN. Omni's IP
address already gets enough users to add some safety in numbers. It
also has a better reputation than many VPN IPs, which leads to better
browsing in my experience. I rarely have to fill out captchas from
Omni.

They don't have a rack-mount case for the nice low-power board with
AES acceleration. They have this case instead:

It's a fanless case though :/ but I guess we can configure
auto-shutdown if it gets too hot?

I found a cheaper alternative. I recently got one of the older systems
from PC Engines and I've been really happy with it. I looked at their
newer stuff and they have this:

Which has AES-NI and four LAN ports.
Assembled and with an aluminum case it comes to $145 + shipping.
It works by having the CPU on the bottom of the mainboard and directly
connecting it to the aluminum case which acts as a heat spreader. I
tested mine with a high-powered wifi card and mSATA drive attached,
maxing out CPU, IO and wifi transmit, and it didn't go above 79 C at
25 C ambient. Both my CPU and this CPU can take 90 C. Since we're not
adding a WiFi card we can probably expect better performance. I'd
assume we won't hit 90 C until ambient temperatures get close to ~40 C
and then only if maxing out the CPU.
I've written a script that shuts down the computer at a set
temperature. Because the case itself is the heatsink, we can simply
strap any additional CPU heat-sink + fan to the bottom (or top) of the
case and add as much cooling as we want.
Or we could just have the script send us an email and shut it down at
87 C and hope we'll never hit those temperatures.
btw, this board has the bonus of running coreboot + SeaBIOS.

Click Shop -> USD prices.
On the APU tab, find "apu4c4" and change the 0 to 1.
A bit further down set "case1d4redu" to 1 (or whichever color you prefer).
At the bottom of the same tab, find "assy" and set to 1.

now is something I found at a thrift store for $7 (minus battery) and
