We've been having trouble with our internet.
First we noticed terrible ping times (500 to 1500 ms) and Max B who has
been running ping monitoring verified that this issue has been coming and
going since around the beginning of July.
I haven't seen that issue over the past couple of days but we _are_ getting
much less bandwidth than what we're paying for.
I just disconnected everything from the DSL moodel and ran a speedtest with
my laptop hooked straight into the DSL model and I got about 27 mbit/sec
down and 2 mbit/sec up.
2 mbit/sec upstream is a problem since we're trying to live-stream cyber
wizard institute talks in 720p and the audio is dropping out.
I filed a support request with LMI over the phone (no-one picked up).
Hopefully they'll get back to me soon.
The only thing it could be on our end is the kinda crummy cable we ran from
the Rise Above room to the server rack. Anyone want to re-run this in a
less terrible way?

Thanks for the update Juul.
Volunteering:
I volunteer to help with this wiring work, but definitely would be nice to
have someone else tagging along.
When:
A tentative day would be this coming Saturday, starting very early in the
day.
The idea:
To run the cable parallel to the current cable, and when ready to swap, we
swap, reducing the down time.

The issues seem to have been fixed. The ISP tech support person just left.
We are now getting 90+ down and 20+ up.
There were multiple issues. He re-did the connections at both ends of our
internal ethernet cable (the one running to the DSL modem), which helped.
Then he disconnected the shitty phone we have connected to the line and
that helped. Apparently it was generating noise on the line. Then he
replaced the phone cable going to the DSL modem from the wall jack next to
the server rack. All of this together got us close to the speed we got when
we were hooked straight into the phone lines in the Rise Above room.
They did recommend that we re-run the cable from Rise Above to our DSL
modem.
I ordered another 1000' roll of cat5e outdoor shielded cable which should
arrive on Friday. Daniel talked about re-running this on Saturday so I will
try to ensure that it is at sudo room before Saturday morning. It's
probably a good idea to ground this cable at both ends. I like to ground
stuff by making a three-prong AC plug that only has the ground wire (though
I know that's not the "professional" way of doing things).

How confident are we in the ground at each end of the run? Is the
existing cabling shielded and grounded at both ends? If we're going to
ground both ends of the run, let's make sure we're not making a
significant ground loop.
I don't know nearly enough about the electrical service at Omni to have
an opinion on whether a ground loop is likely, and I'm definitely not a
pro at this kind of thing, but I think if you stop just short of
hooking it up and measure the current through the drain wire, as long
as it's reasonably low you're in good shape.
I don't do a lot with shielded twisted pair though, so if I'm confused,
please correct me. :)

I don't know about grounding either, but I have seen switch racks being
grounded; ours is not. Perhaps another thing to our list of things to do.

TERMINATING:
CAT6A its a pain, I only have done it once. And now that I just watched
this video (linked below), I see that that time I did it not quiet right.
Cabling imho seems easy, but has a lot little things to look for; for
example"
degree of bending,
cover toxic or not,
gauge,
distance,
grounding,
no reg staples usage,
if possible a few inches away from electrical cables,
untwist as much as possible when terminating,
peeling down cable w the string to avoid cutting internal cables. :)
anyways.. fun stuff.
No to mention to have patch panels and connectors of the same category (5e
with 5e; Cat6 with Cat6).
Oh yeah, and grounding.

in an industrial environment. In a business or home application there isn't
the RFI that causes signal noise. With that said, if you want to use STP
(older name for F/FTP) cable, you only connect the drain wire (grounding
wire) on one end of the cable. If you connect both ends you could create a
potential ground loop if the devices on either end of the link are
connected to different power sources (mains). Normally you would ground at
the switch end of the link. You will need special STP jack and plugs. Both
have a metal shell to conduct any electrical noise to ground. You can tell
if your device supports STP grounding by looking at the jack to see if
there is a metal grid around the jack, if it is metal then you can get the
ground from there. Also the STP jacks have a metal conductor around the
outside of the jack. You typically need to ground only the long runs. Using
STP cable between the wall jack and the device offers little protection."

It's actually quite important to untwist as *little* as possible. The
twists are the main noise-rejecting feature of the cable, so you want
the conductor pairs to stay twisted as close as possible to the
termination point.
