I'm wondering how monitoring works on the server. Should I go through
the trouble of setting up zabbix or nagios, or is there a monitoring
system at the colo we could plug into?

We use nagios for monitoring. Which I can easily add you to, would probably
be best if we could setup a distribution list for the alerts to go to.
sysalert(a)sudoroom.org ?
