I see that Omnicommons.org uses Gandi, and sudoroom.org uses DigitalOcean.
Are any of these two still okay to support or do you know of any other
options that I should consider?

Can you be more clear about what you mean by "okay to support"? And are
you asking for other VPS provider suggestions, or for a higher-level
website hosting platform?
As for registrars, I've been using Hover for quite a few years with
only one minor complaint (they don't support DNSSEC for .me domains, but
that's an admittedly very niche complaint). There was a discussion a few
months back on Hacker News about Gandi reneging on their free mailbox
perk post-buyout, with people sharing plenty of anecdotes about verious
registrars:

Answering your first question:
With 'okay to support' I meant, a company that we should support with our
busine$$ because of their good reputation and philosophy.
Your second question, definitely, I was not clear enough. Thank you.
Yes, currently the domains are on a high level platform (cPanel), but I
would like to jump into a couple cheap droplets on DigitalOcean and see how
it goes.
I expect this to be a more complex and slow process to accomplish, but it
is okay with me.

OK, that's what I figured you were getting at. I don't have much of an
opinion on Digital Ocean specifically since I don't use them myself, but
I haven't heard anything significant about them. There are definitely
providers I have heard significant things about. OVH, for example,
recently had a huge datacenter fire because they didn't have proper fire
suppression equipment:

OK, so you are trying to run your own VPS machines. Very cool! I do this
myself, and I'd be happy to offer my advice and experiences.
For choosing VPS providers, there are a few options.
If you want the very cheapest option, there's a constant parade of cheap VPS
offerings on https://lowendbox.com/ . Most of those "companies" are
actualy one or two-person affairs, and I've found those to have a
half-life of around 2 years. That's not to say they shouldn't be used,
but you should definitely have more than one VPS going from different
providers, and keep good backups for the eventual day that your VPS is
gone without a trace because their server lost its RAID.
The slightly bigger / more reliable providers like Digital Ocean, Vultr,
Linode, etc. are a good choice if you're willing to spend more to get
more reliability. I'd definitely still keep your own backups, but I
would trust these providers a bit more.
Then there are the really big ones: AWS, GCP, and Azure. These tend to
be more expensive and have really complicated pricing structures.
They're possibly worth it if you're doing something that really
elaborate or needs extremely bursty computing resources.
Overall, I'd say Digital Ocean is a fine place to start with running VPS
servers. Give it a shot and feel free to ask more questions (though
perhaps on the sudo-discuss mailing list, since sudo-sys is more meant
for sudoroom-specific networking topics).

Also, thank you for your input on the VPS vendors info.
I am staying with DO, it is easy and has more than enough of what I want to
do.
So far so good with the things I have done some far, for example
- Tweaking the SSH config file a bit.
- Updating OpenSSL to the latest version, due to: *"# An OpenSSL
vulnerability has recently been fixed with USN-6188-1 & 6119-1: **#
CVE-2023-2650: possible DoS translating ASN.1 object identifiers. **#
Ensure you have updated the package to its latest version." *Found easy
to follow instructions (

and the upgrade went smoothly.
- Installing ngnix.
- Reserved the IP, in case I have to destroy and create new droplets.
Next is to get informed how to get a domain attached to the droplet
(Digital Ocean calls them that), and also how to get let's encrypt using
certbot.

also uses DO as a nameserver, while omni uses cloudflare.
I have been using DO for vps for a long time, and have never had much
of a reason to switch. Lately they've been focusing more on scale, and
less on innovative ux features, which is disappointing but not
surprising. I'm open to other suggestions but it's worked fine for me
and my projects. I used to like Linode because of their OS support and
lish (i wish everything had lish) but they got too expensive.

support for certbot which has won me over lately - they make it easy
to create access tokens with granular permissions to eg renew a
wildcard cert and nothing else. Cloudflare is not a particularly
ethical choice, they're a mini empire who doesn't give a shit about
you, but they're dev friendly and less evil than amazon, and tbh this
is low on the list of things that keeps me up at night.
The last time I seriously researched registrars was about a decade
ago, and I settled then on gandi, mostly because of DNSSEC support.

I remain quite happy with Gandi for both personal and business domain registrations. I’m
moving substantially everything else to GCP, as they have approximately the sophistication
of AWS, but seem moderately less ethically challenged. Also, their us-west1 region is low
carbon.
I used to use Linode and I’m still migrating away from DO. Linode is completely useless if
you ever get DDoS’d, which hopefully you won’t, but they’ll just shut you down and act
like it’s your fault. DO is generally fine, but they lack the technical sophistication of
the large cloud players, and that’s something I currently need.
It may not be anything you need, but GCP could still be worth trying. There’s free credits
and stuff and it can also be a useful skill, depending on whether you ever want a job in
the cloud space.

It seems that I only read the DNS section of one of the two domain queries.
I need to make the effort to scroll a bit more, the next time. haha
I have an account at DO that I have used to play with and destroy droplets
after.
For work, I am running a RustDesk server with them.

Even though GCP is one of the leading cloud technologies companies, I can
avoid it but my brain hurts. Perhaps I need to stare at it longer.
Eight personal domains are the ones that I want to move out of Hostmonster,
because their prices are way too much for me, and tech support could be
better.
The yearly total paid gives me nausea, and the desire of moving somewhere
else comes to mind.
Anyway, I feel that I should look into Gandhi + DO.
