I said "your 'community' space," but honestly, I still want this to be my space, too. I hardly ever make a fuss about any of this stuff because it's all so futile, you know? but in this case, I really want to make my point clear: I think we should rescind our action against Rannette. I think she's been treated unfairly. Even if she is "aggressive" towards you or your compatriots, I don't think we need white dudes policing our space of black women's bodies. Matt, you claim to have acted in another's interest and you offer an injured third party -- let them speak for themselves, because I don't think it's your place right now. If there was a violent incident that threatened our space, let's hear it from a witness or an involved party. "Something Happened" is not good enough. Otherwise "but above all the Omni Commons must maintain a safe, welcoming environment" seems to fly directly in the face of the lived experience of too many black people.

Call for Facilitators / Participants in a sudo Men's Group

Hey all, I wanted to reach out for some feedback. Seeking folks who would want to facilitate or participate in a men's group. I've previously participated in small groups like this and found them beneficial for various reasons. I would like to see if folks have had similar or different experiences. The way I'm thinking about this would culminate in something like a regular meeting for men in the sudo room community to discuss relevant issues including those of identity, oppression, privilege, patriarchy, gender, sexuality, stereotypes, safe space, and mutual support. This may not be the best or even a viable path to approach these topics, but I wanted to throw it out there to see if there is any interest. Thanks, Matt

It's not huge as SEM's go, but definitely not desktop - more like "small room sized". And it would obviously need some dedicated person to keep it in good running condition. It is however almost brand new, and currently *running*, at <5nm resolution! Beam Services Inc is down in Pleasanton, so I guess interested parties could potentially go and have a look at the system. This kind of equipment would be a significant commitment and investment in time and effort on our part, so let's coordinate on this shall we? someone keeps leaving the front door unlocked

what did you expect would happen when you handed out physical keys to people? they copy them and hand out copies, and then those get copied too. Now someone is repeatedly using their key to unlock the front door, and leaving the lock in the "unlocked" position. I arrived at Omni at 10PM and the door was like that. I immediately found someone with a key and used their key to re-lock the door, and I confirmed with that person that they understood to always re-lock the door after using their key. When I left Omni at 2:15AM, it was unlocked again. I had a front-door key stashed somewhere and I went and got it to re-lock the door, since there was nobody around answering my request for a front door key. The moral of the story? Someone with a key is leaving the front door unlocked, multiple times a day, including between the hours of 10PM and 2AM. I have worked very hard to make sure the magnetic stripe access card system is 100% reliable, including it having a battery backup and automatic notifications that go out to multiple people if anything goes wrong. I did this work so we wouldn't make the same mistake of handing out physical keys that get copied and copied and handed out to whomever. I propose we re-key the front door and only give keys to very specific people who promise not to make any copies. It's easy enough to add cards to the card access system (that's a whole other discussion) that we should not have to be handing out keys anymore. -jake

need M8 bolts for robot

so there's a robot being built at sudoroom... another one. it's based on a golf-club bag caddy cart thing I pulled out of the trash at Shipyard in berkeley. It's pretty lightweight so it's less likely to break peoples legs if it goes berzerk, compared with the last mobile robot i made (MC Hawking) which was based on a really heavy electric wheelchair. Robb has supplied some awesome batteries, lfp100aha which each need two bolts to connect to them, M8 thread, and no more than 10mm long threads with no shoulder. We have four of them so we need eight bolts. if you have access to a kit of M8 bolts and can grab eight 10mm long (the threaded part that is) of them, we need them to proceed with the robot. it's next to the regular robot arm, which is in its usual spot. If you bring the bolts to me or Robb or place them in the hand of the big robot, that would be awesome. Also, seeking AI programmers to make this robot work. thank you -jake
