Geiger counters measure beta and gamma, typically. Alpha particles are hard to detect.

I think we already have one of these monitors, as I have seen it around CCL. Funny how I
can't find anywhere information about what kinds of radiation they are detecting. I
gather that it's just X-ray/Cosmic stuff and not alpha/beta particles, etc?

Awesome, I'm willing to help!
I have a Geiger counter from this kit
http://mightyohm.com/blog/products/geiger-counter/
that we can use for educational / demonstration / artistic purposes as well!
I emailed the contact address on the website: radu.motisan(a)gmail.com
There's no obvious way to purchase a device or see how much one costs, so I asked.

One of their node models has a barometric pressure sensor as well. Not sure to what extent
this is an open source project, but we could find out.
