So, I had an idea that I wanted to run past everyone: What if we invited people (both within Sudoroom, and perhaps some of the creative/art groups at the Omni) to redecorate our giveaway laptops? My reasons for suggesting this are as follows: 1. It's fun 2. It's an opportunity to introduce other Omni people to Sudoroom 3. People who might not be comfortable coming to sudoroom for technical stuff might be interested in a creative project, and find us friendlier than they'd expected 4. A lot of the laptops just have IT stickers on them indicating machine iDs and such, that don't mean anything anymore. What do you all think? Would a weekend be good for this? The Chromebooks need flashing, but there was a stack of Dells that were ready to go (sort of…they need wiping) last time I was there. I like the idea of having an event when we get the flashing tools in. Perhaps we could do a test run with the Dells? Obviously the event would be free but we could set up a donation site to raise money for Sudoroom as well. I love the idea of more events like this, but i want to say two things: The anti-theft stickers on the laptops are difficult to remove and leave a "STOLEN PROPERTY 1-800-488-STOP" mark behind, which is obviously really crappy. This is absolutely the last thing poor kids need to deal with, both for their own personal self-worth and also practical matters that they might be harassed and even arrested even though they've done nothing wrong, let alone have their computer taken away. So this needs to be the first focus: developing a process for removing these tags and cleaning the "tattoo" off before doing anything else. I recommend first confirming the computer boots properly from USB but doing nothing else, let the new owners experience the joy of installing linux themselves! But this removal process should be done by us, before inviting people to receive computers, and it's going to be boring unfortunately. I have just escalated my attempts to connect to the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland, because i hope it's a great way to find young people who can't afford computers and can benefit from them (as well as whatever support we can offer) so prepare to hear back from them. that said, i am pretty busy lately so I am not bottomlining this effort :) but i can offer lots of potential laptop stickers! The process might be slightly easier if it’s feasible to migrate the schools to mainstream Linux (you would at least avoid the labor of forking ChromeOS), but that would involve research into what software and tools the schools are relying on that can be replicated outside of ChromeOS. Sure, there's no technical reason why not, but I think it would take a full time team to get that many in a usable state. If schools across California are trying to avoid spending $225M on new devices, that is a business opportunity for whoever can develop a process for it. You would need at least: * People to create & maintain working builds of chromiumOS or a fork, and automate that * People to interface with all the school districts about their particular needs, and communicate back * People to actively develop all the software components to keep them "up to par" * People to flash firmwares all day Tragically, it seems like someone did exactly this in 2015, had some mild growth and success, and then Google bought them out.
