Hi all,
Are there are woodworkers in the house? I have some questions about a wooden frame I’d
like to build for a large illuminated matrix. I have some basic questions about types of
wood and CAD software for working in wood.
Anybody out there? Thanks.

not the question you're asking but one idea I thought of for supporting
small diameter LED matrix is just using pegboard. you can manually
drill out the holes to a larger diameter if needed

Hey thanks for the suggestion. I’m actually thinking of building essentially a small light
box for each “pixel” with a white opaque screen at the opening and addressable RGB led at
other end. Goal is to create the box long enough or with a collimating lens so that the
light is almost parallel when it hits the screen. This way it has a luscious even glow at
the screen. So it’s actually a matrix of 10x30 cells, 4”x4” by 3-6” deep each.
Trying to optimize weight/strength and also engineer the right fasteners for it.

hmm I almost want to spraypaint some egg crates silver for the lens
array. sounds cool, keep us posted! you could take white pegboard to
give you your grid and then comb some 1/4" plywood to form the cell
grid:

I imagine Jake could help you CNC drill holes in blank plywood with the
robot and I would happily bring a 6pack and watch.

Ooooo yea. Great stackexchange post. Egg crate idea is a step in the right direction too,
hadn’t thought about building my own reflector. Also could just spraypaint the LED end of
the box white. Brightness is a key goal of mine. Collimating lenses are not a cost
effective way of evening light.
