Young Academy would like to invite the community of the Sudo room to the
idea challenge ‘Make A Difference’.
Make A Difference is planned to get affluent participation from designers,
hobbyists, tinkerers, DIYers, makers, engineers, and students from around
the world. Make A Difference is opened to everyone. However, all
participants must be at least 18 years old.
*Deadline for submissions: 1st of June, 2017.*
We would also like to point out that Make A Difference is an open source

this Tuesday afternoon I was disappointed to discover that the internet was not
working at Omni.
I found that the DSL modem we rent from LMI had no link to the outside world,
and that neither of the two phone lines it's supposed to connect to are active.
I called LMI and started a trouble ticket, and scheduled a visit by AT&T who is
responsible for our phone lines arriving at the building. After getting off
the phone (right before LMI closed for the day) i plugged a phone directly into
the entry point box in the corner of the Phat Beats room and confirmed that the
problem is NOT inside our building.
The phone lines coming into our building cross the street to the construction
zone across 48th street, so I assume they cut our lines. Hopefully AT&T will
come fix it tomorrow. The LMI ticket number for this incidnt is 78496
They have my phone number, and if they arrive and have trouble getting in the
front door or into the room with the phone boxes I can buzz them in and tell
them the lock combo. Hopefully they will come tomorrow afternoon.
Separately, i noticed that our DSL modem was only connected to one of the two
phone lines, which would have halved our bandwidth. We should fix that by
finding a four-conductor phone cable with RJ13 ends, and using it to connect
the modem to the jack on the wall in the server area.

my friend left his Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptop at sudoroom last tuesday (1
week ago) and i'm hoping someone found it and put it somewhere safe.
if you need a detailed description of it let me know.
thanks,

Hey all,
Laura reminded me that next Sunday is Mother's Day. which doesn't seem a
good date to have a work/painting party.
That said let's push everything, but the book removal over one week:
Book deadline still Mon May 15
Front hall cleaning & painting: Sun May 21
Omni Pay What You Can Sale: Sun May 28 (if the ballroom is still open that
day)
Dump run: Tues May 30
Hello Omni,
The Welcoming Working Group is slowly getting more organized, sorry it’s
taking so long, if you would like to sign-up for a door shift you can add
your name to our online shift tracker…
https://www.omnicommons.org/frontdesk
Even if someone has already signed up on a shift you want go ahead and sign
up for the same time as well. That’s actually a good thing, because then
someone can stay watching the door while someone else can give tours.
We will also be compiling a door shift training manual very soon that goes
over Omni rules that must be followed and how to greet/interact with
visitors.
We are going to be painting and beautifying the front entryway next Sunday
May 14.
Painting, which will encompass the walls and ceiling, will begin at 5pm.
Before painting though some prep work needs to get done, including patching
some holes in the walls, replacing ceiling tiles and consolidating &
organizing wires, this will happen Saturday night & Sunday
morning/afternoon.
Contact me if you would like to paint, patch, glue or whatever else in this
endeavor.
There’s a lot of work to get the whole main hall beautified and part of
that is we are shifting, moving, donating books that were a part of the
former library.
That said, if there are any books you would like to keep for yourself GET
THEM NOW, they will be donated and gone by Monday May 15.
The Omni Pay What You Can Sale is going down Sunday May 21 all afternoon in
the ballroom.
I am personally motivated to clear out the basement again, but this is an
opportune time for any group or area of Omni to get cleaned out.
If there is something your collective wants to get rid of please get it
ready for the move to the ballroom.
We’re asking that you keep that stuff in your area until the day of the
sale, DO NOT move it to the main hall or basement. If you absolutely need
the space in your area before May 21 you may move it to the basement ONLY
if you are giving your word of honor that you personally will carry it up
from the basement to the ballroom on the day of the event.
Stuff that does not make its way out via the sale will be hauled away to
the dump Tuesday May 23. Hopefully the sale will have generated enough cash
to pay for the dump runs.
Come to the Welcoming Working Group meetings Mondays @ 5pm or contact me
personally if you have any questions or want to help,
Marcus
Did anyone see an Amazon package for CCL that was supposedly delivered
Sunday morning? 12"x10", but relatively light. Please let me know - it has
some more rodent abatement materials that I was hoping to try out for the
Phat Beets room.
Also, did the mail cubbyholes get moved to a different location? They are
no longer behind the front desk area.
If anyone is willing to take the lead on getting us a larger and more
secure mailbox with one or more package drops, that would be greatly
appreciated! I think CCL can contribute a few hundred, but I'm not
personally able to coordinate this right now.
Thanks!
Patrik

Subject: [sudo-info] Mediation Letter: Robert Albert Young Chu
To: <info(a)sudoroom.org>
Cc:
Dear Sudo Room Community & The Omni Commons at Large,
Approximately two years ago, I was asked to leave the Omni Commons for a
month, and to only come back if I have a person who would sponsor(chaperon)
my presence. My attempt to return has been self-prolonged so that I can
focus on other major aspects of my life. I attended the April Sudo Room
meeting to discuss my mediation and return more in depth, explained I do
not want to do the sponsor item upon my return because I feel it would be
healthier to come back when thorough mediation has occurred with the
elements of clear communication, assurance, certainty, and expectations.
At that very positive and supportive meeting, we were able to go over a bit
about how my behavior was negative, destructive, and hazardous to the
community. I also was able to express lightly some of the reasons for my
inconvenient actions, which particularly were based on my narrow-sided and
hyper-focused, mindset at the time. I then asked the people in attendance,
for guidance to continue forth with my mediation. The optimal response I
received was to write a letter to the Sudo Room community with some
specifics that should be included, then come to the meeting after to
discuss.
At that time in my life two-three years ago, I was not really in a stable
situation, and was spending an excessive and unhealthy amount of time at
the Omni Commons. Not to mention was the cause of me being banned from
another Hackerspace. It was through my own idiosyncrasy, which caused my
narrow-sided hyper-focused mindset; encompassed by the semi-obsessive
desire to get projects completed. At the time I was unable to realize these
bugs in my personality and how my actions affected the people around me,
nor the negative impacts they have attributed too.
In the meeting, I also discussed some of the my life changes over the past
two years-positively exonerating some of my previous destructive
personality traits. Which instilled a calmer, thoughtful, open mind, to my
current presence. Some changes I merit are: first ever family road trip
with my sister (whom we were split up with since we were kids), brother in
law, and immediate family, to Mexico for the holidays, renting a car for
the first time, going on a solo road trip for the first time, changing my
diet, quitting alcohol and caffeine, working out, and setting obtainable
goals for myself.
It was through my patience that I decided not to immediately pursue
mediation because it would have been very similar (history would have
repeated), but rather minimize that to work on other areas of my life.
While I was away, I obtained solid housing, started receiving disability
(for an assault & 2²" hole left in my skull), medical/dental, working
out/fasting, bought a car, taking classes, traveling, got a gym membership,
and finally was able to have the tranquility to sit down and write this
letter. I have also personally grown from the previous two years.
Being able to return to Sudo Room and the Omni Commons is paramount to me
for the aspects of learning, community, place to complete projects, like
mindedness, relationship building (and yes repairing), and also because of
the good nature it has at large. As stated earlier, Mediation, Assurance,
Certainty, Expectations, and Communication, being achieved (especially with
the people that were impacted negatively) are my own standards for
returning. In addition, after my potential return, I infer that my past
destructive patterns of my behavior, will not be a problem because of the
positive personal changes. Some are: a lot more centered, better at
listening to others advice, and have a clearer understanding of my own
present day actions and their impacts.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter,
as we continue to work on our mediation together.
-Due to the length please before the next meeting or
or make time for review during the meeting (June 12th).

After changes made on Tuesday the wifi has been super flaky. DNS lookups
start failing after a certain period, disconnecting/reconnecting wont fix
but switching APs might. But it will happen again on that one. So far I've
seen similar symtons on sudomesh, peoples and Omni Commons
*Hello All, *
Today (Saturday) thanks to Marc, Rob, and yours truly the server "cage"
area got some Love. : )
It still needs more love, but with a vacuum and a brush to get the dust out
under the four post rack, and production gear itself.
And not to mention all the wiring that will need to be redone (but this for
part the future).
*AN IDEA IN PROGRESS: *
Migrate all gear and patch panels into the four post rack, so we gain more
space by removing the two posts rack.
*MOVING THINGS IN AND OUT:*
* The three old red servers that were not in used were removed.
* The server that Marc had configure (I forgot what is what the told me he
had configured) got install in the four post rack.
* The 2 HP switches got moved to the 2 post rack to the 4post rack.
* There is old stuff and things we are not going to use. I feel we should
check with Marcus and see if we can add these items to the "pay what you
can" sale event. Rob suggested to have a list and announce the items for
that sale, and also suggested that we put some of that stuff in eBay.
*NEW (USED) GEAR THINGS RUNNING:*
* The 24 and 38 HP switches are running along w the Ruckus wireless
controller, and one of Ruckus Access Points.
* This AP was temporarily set on top of one of the servers and pointing to
the Sudoroom tables, pushing the "Omni Commons" SSID. :)
*COMING TO OMNI EARLY IN THE MORNING:*
I am considering to come to omni about 6:30am (after taking my better half
to work).
*PLAN FOR SUNDAY EARLY MORNING PLAN:*
Since I am going to the there early, and Marc already gave me the Gateway
Server interfaces (LANs) overview, I feel that it would be a good time to
swap their cables to connect to the HP switches, and these to feed the Dell
Switches instead. By doing this I don't perceive anything going south.
*WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?:*
Marc and I talked about it, and we agreed that doing this will allow us to
have a nicer and controlled migration, so we don't have to do that all at
once. This is trivial, now that I know what LANs is each interface at the
Linux server level.
*BTW:*
We started about 11AM something, and ended about 7:40PM. It was a whole day
thing.
Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions. I will check
email before starting anything tomorrow.
