Hey Sudo!
We¹re having a post-new-roof clean-up party! Friday, Jan 3 starting ~11AM to
5pm-ish.
Now that the roof is fixed and SudoRoom is dry, it¹s time to clean up!
The roof replacement generated A LOT of stuff that fell and coated the
horizontal surfaces that weren¹t under a tarp.
There will be snacks, drinks, fun and breaks! If you can chip in funds,
we'll get a take-out.
There will be shop vacs with hepa filters, ladders and brushes. We¹ll have
some surgical masks.
If you have a respirator, it would be a good idea to bring it.
The goal is to clean up as much as we can and not to burn-out.There will be
other clean-up days.
Start at the higher shelves then clean the workbenches. If time, vacuum or
broom the floors.
Fans will be running to move air and the shop filter will be on.
Call/text Kent @ 510-504-0634.
Hope to see you there! -Eric, Kent and Raelyn
Hi Sudoers:
Ring in the New Year at Sudoroom: here are some projects we’ll be
working on tonight:
-Telepresence monitor: we’ve now got two large candidate TVs to try to
get working: 1) Patrik from CCL’s Samsung un48J5200AF 48” TV (“It has
been having intermittent problems with the screen going black”) and the
55” 4K TV, Toshiba Model K550WDR1/55l621U (when power is applied It
displays the splash screen with the logo, and then goes out.) It’d be
great to get at least one of these TVs working so we can mount it to the
rolling monitor stand and use it to telepresence people into Sudorooom
via jitsi or Discord.
-Chromebook Conversion: want a lightweight laptop you can experiment
with Linux on? We have lots of Chromebooks retired by school districts
that are convertible to Linux; you can have one to help build out a
Chromebook and Linux hacking, distribution and support practice at
Sudoroom. (See http://bit.ly/cbsave for more details.)
-Donation Stations for Sudoroom and Free Store: we have some large PVC
tubing we need to secure to a heavy base. I’ve also got some electronics
we can use to trigger positive feedback celebratory and acknowledgment
effects when someone donates, and other electronics to sound an alarm if
someone tries to make off with it.
*** And don’t forget Kent’s cleanup scheduled for Friday Jan 5 11-5:
let’s get a head start on that tonight and purge some clutter. ***
Hope to see you later, -Peter
Is anyone interested in doing a 2024 year in review for our blog at
SudoRoom?
Some highlights:
- Women and NonBinary night has been really awesome and rocking!
- July/ish? we were saved by EBPrec
- Romy: started a "learning how to learn" chapter, reduced some screen
time.
- Romy: we started doing meetups that focused on face to face - minimal
screens, no remote, with just whiteboards. this resulted in a lot of great
things! like our algebraic data types with RUST -
https://sudoroom.org/algebraic-data-types-in-rust-whiteboard-style-kung-fu-…
- What was your most surprising encounter at SudoRoom this year?
- What did you learn this year at SudoRoom?
- What do you plan for 2025? i might make a google form about this

Winter Seasons Greetings!
I am reaching out to let everyone know that the new roof installation
process has concluded. The roofing crews last day was on 12/13 and this
past week our team performed a third visual inspection after final punch
list items were concluded.
In the coming days, CALLI will square away the final paperwork for this
project. The Sierra Roofing team has shown us that the roof is weather
proofed and the work appears to be satisfactory. Please keep in mind that
there is meant to be a warranty on the work performed by the company. In
the event that there are leaks/droplets identified please let me know via
email or slack as soon as possible and we will try and identify the source.
Over the scope of the project, two additional building issues were brought
to our attention pertaining to the exterior wall of the building facing
47th street that will need updates in the coming year, and the design of
the rafter beams that go into the stucco wall on the front facing Shattuck
side of the building (close to the overlaps with the tile) that might be
cause for an additional scope of work. The CALLI team will continue to
review capital improvement needs and work on scheduling building upgrades
to strengthen the longevity of the building. In the meantime feel free to
remove your tarps and protective sheeting, and make efforts to clean and
operate your spaces at normal capacities.
This post construction period coupled with the ongoing pest/rodent
servicing will be most successful if we are able to stay alert and monitor
whether the changes are making a positive impact.
Thank you and happy holidays,

Hi Sudoers:
Heads up that KQED is going to be at Sudoroom tonight to get advance
footage for a Fixit Clinic event Jan 22 at KQED headquarters:
https://www.kqed.org/events/4915/fixit-clinic
Ericka Cruz Guevarra, Host and Producer of KQEDs The Bay podcast
<https://www.kqed.org/podcasts/thebay> will be bringing a clock to be
looked at tonight; that and the other items we might see are at
bit.ly/itemcheckins
Also: someone (Patrik from CCL?) left a Samsung un48J5200AF 48” TV (If
it’s Patrik’s: “It has been having intermittent problems with the screen
going black,”) We also still have the 55” 4K TV, Toshiba Model K550WDR1
/ Toshiba 55l621U disassembled: when power is applied It displays the
splash screen with the logo, and then goes out. It’d be great to get at
least one of these TVs working so we can use it to telepresence people
in to sudorooom.
And we’re building out a core of stewards for Sudoroom’s
Chromebook/laptop refurbishing, conversion to Linux and long-term
support program. I plan to bring some converted and convert-able
Chromebooks to play with tonight. (see http://bit.ly/cbsave.)
Let’s put on a great show!
See you later, -Peter
Hi all,
I used to live in Oakland 9 years ago (wow…), of when I used to attend hack nights at Sudoroom and participate in festivities.
I play my own blend of modular psytech. I brought a small backpack hardware setup. If anyone wants to jam between now and Friday nite.
Also planning on taking my battery-powered rig to Dolores park or Lake Merrit to play a set, which is usually a consistent 137bpm. Control voltage and analog contraptions highly encouraged.
Cheers. And continue hacking the Planet ✊🖖
Oh, a link to my music can be found here:

I have a 50" TV that I'd like to donate to Sudo.
It has been having intermittent problems with the screen going black. I
don't have time to chase down the issue, but maybe someone there can
diagnose the problem during one of the FixIt clinics.
Shall I drop it off?
Patrik
