Well even though we don't always get along imagine how much worse it would be if you
took the brightest folks doing the great work And forced them to be youth counsellors or
socialize with ladies who lunch )they are nice though (
We all understand each other. We are not the passive types who just accept things the way
they are. All of us are creators !
I can certainly socialize with cool people who are not hackers at work . I love having a
work personality.
But life in Silicon Valley would be bleak indeed if I weren't around the eccentric
socially adventurous folks at Sudoroom . I had a particularly dreadful time in my life
living in San Jose .. It was definitely different & there are folks who do camp out In
front of Walmart on Black Friday and watch tv 24-7x
I hope we can find a wAy to all get along with each other ! I learned so much about low
level programming and 3d printers and I'm happy I can socialize in coed groups with
smart people

Thank you for bringing up this important subject. I would like to expand on this concept
in that compared to so-called "normal people", hackers are enabled in certain
ways and less-enabled in others. From my personal experience, human behaviour often does
not make sense and I find myself at a loss as to how to interact appropriately. There
seems to be some type of underlying protocol in which you are expected to respond in a
prescribed manner, and if you don't then it eventually leads to social rejection
behaviours such as bullying, teasing, ridicule or people passively giving you the silent
treatment. Most people seem to know the protocol without having to learn it, but in my
case, a good amount of effort was required before I was able to map out the structure and
parameters of the protocol.
Research shows that limitations in social interaction have more to do with the hardware
of the brain rather than education, learning or the "software" of the brain. Or
in other words, it is a type of physical disability. Our society has put a good amount of
resources into accommodating people with physical disabilities but unfortunately has left
people with my type of disability out in the cold. Often I find that instead of people
offering assistance with my disability I encounter the type of social rejection behaviors
mentioned earlier.
In fact you can even observe social rejection behaviors occurring in the Sudo Room
Discussion List, where people put up posts describing some sort of interaction which they
unilaterally deem inappropriate and thus feel justified in broadcasting it to everyone
along with demands for everybody to participate in social ostracism. I can see how some
people may even have reservations about going to places like Sudo Room because it is not
really a "Safe Space" for people with certain types of social disabilities.

I was a little down because many well meaning people keep trying to direct me to fields
inappropriate for me.. Social work, children's education . Mommy bloggers , public
school teachers
Maybe it's because I'm a woman ! But I'm a hacker and nerd at heart.
Why do the powers that be try to take these making people and try to drown them out to
become bureaucrats?
Even though we don't always get along we are honestly not passive like most normal
people. I love the energy at Noisebridge and Sudoroom.
If I were forced to stop being a hacker and only socialize with passive non creative
folks it'd definitely be a downer
But part of that energy comes with a dark side. We are often temperamental. We do not
function well In sanitized environments that are "safe for kids". We Are not
always the right people to do social work or teach non passionates
The energy comes with a price!
We are yin and yang.
But id rather hang out with true ha hackers of all genders. I imagine my future
surrounded by bureaucrats and it's not pretty at all .. Or folks lecturing me not to
do my best work because their notions of a woman's happiness are outdated and
traditional
I hope we can all hug next Sunday
Love you all !
