I did take a look at it, but I did not understand the code. To be honest
with you I am not a node expert by any stretch. I was also told that it
would be easier to do this in a separate repo. I think there are plans to
replace it with Drupal later on, so I was going for more of a quick fix.
I am not trying to impose anything for sure.

It seems like this is meant to be run independently of sudo-humans and
exposes a POST endpoint to determine failed invoices? I am curious if you
have taken a look at the sudo-humans repo on Github [1] to see if the
Stripe API you are using can be integrated into that app code. It seems
like it would be ideal if there was not an additional server instance
running to take care of this.
