[sudo-discuss] Partial Occultation of Mars by Moon Tonight

Tonight (Jan 30th) in the early evening, there is a very interesting astronomical event -- an occultation of the planet Mars by the Moon.  A full occultation (eclipse) of Mars is visible all across the southern portion of the United States (and further south). For the Bay Area, the Moon will narrowly miss Mars.  You have to be south of a line from approximately Soledad through Fresno to see Mars fully covered by the Moon. Closest approach is about 8:54pm PST for the Bay Area.  The orange-red color of Mars will make a striking contrast with the silver-white surface of the Moon.  This event can be seen naked-eye, but binoculars or a small telescope will definitely help.
