I had a really nice time at this hardware hacking night - I hung out with some cool ladies
in the sewing room.
I guess I would be interested in setting up "guard rails" for any women-related
activities at sudoRoom:
(a) could we set up a guard rail so women involved in sudoroom aren't instantly
funneled into anything childcare / youth caretaking related?
(b) could we emphasize that women can do things for the pure fun of it instead of as a
utility? For example hacking?
What I'm seeing with a lot of women and diversity initiatives is that you either learn
tech (programming) to (b) do something for social good / charity (a) get shoved into
anything educational and childcare related.
Interestingly, men tend to be directed to education but at the academic and university
level -- not the high school and youth mentoring level, or at least that's my
experience.
We could also be aware of all the problems with unequal housework and try to "create
a room of one's own". Women should be made aware that they shouldn't have to
be responsible for housework / childcare / domestic duties as much as they are, and the
time they spend at SudoRoom is their own.
Statistically women have much fewer hobbies than men, and when they do things in their
free time it's very volunteer and charity oriented. This is cool but it leaves much
less time for pure personal self development and ... what can I call it? having fun!
