Hi Hilary,
Other than SMS/MMS messages (which will work for pretty much anyone with a cell phone),
most of the other messaging apps only work between people who have that app installed on
their phone. (For instance, only people with Telegram can message people on Telegram.
Only people with Signal can message people on Signal.)
It's a bit confusing because Signal until very recently would intercept SMS and MMS
messages. But Signal ended that.
You don't need to worry about any settings for defaults. If you send a regular SMS to
someone with the native Android Message app, then any replies will appear in that same
app. If you send a message of any kind using Signal, then any replies will appear in
Signal. No need to mess with any settings at all.
You can also have any number of apps for messaging on your phone. Any message you send on
any of these apps goes to a person who uses that app -- and any reply will appear in that
app. Again, no need to mess with any settings.

Good to hear from you. If I understand you correctly, I can make the Android Message the
default text app (I have make something teh default, right?) and ordinary SMS/MMS messages
will arrive there, and for those people in contact list who use Signal, the messages will
still happen on Signal. Is that correct?

You can use as many texting/messaging apps as you like on your phone. I have about 15 of
them on my phone (since I know so many people who only use one of them, and I'm fine
using any on my phone that aren't owned by Facebook).
When Signal dropped plain SMS/MMS, I now use the native Android Message app for my SMS/MMS
(for some of my friends who don't have any other messaging app, or who only have
Whatsapp or FB Messenger) and use Signal for all of the people I know who use Signal
(which is most people I know).

Hi all,
I'm a bit confused about what's happening with Signal. I know many if not all of
you use it, and I do too. But many of my contacts are not using Signal and are unlikely to
change if I ask them to (iPhone people are especially attached to their Message app I
find). So does the change (not supporting SMS/MMS) mean that I have to abandon Signal
altogether? I can't use two texting apps at the same time can I?
I'd appreciate any advice and recommendations.
