Dear Sudoroom,
Today I voted in behalf of Sudoroom in favor of the MOP proposal, and they are
now a member collective of Omni Commons. I emailed about them on April 20th
but didn't hear anything back, so I hope everyone is okay with that decision.
Today a proposal was introduced for a new committee to be formed at Omni
Commons to value and protect the safety and interests of BIPOC/Non-Men.
this is the original proposal in PDF form:
https://omnicommons.org/pipermail/consensus/attachments/20220505/ab900701/a…
this is an editable "cryptpad" and
we are requested to "please leave comments in red"
https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/edit/6IhZqwyXxN6CrEvtiljmnqTa/
actually this is a cryptpad copy of their document just for sudoroom, and I
will forward our discussion to Rafiq to integrate our input.
Other collectives are asking questions too, so if you want to be more engaged
in the discussion, please join the [omni-consensus] list! But definitely make
discussion here in the sudoroom list and get engaged.
If Sudoroom members have concerns or objections, we need to communicate them
promptly and work toward agreeable amedments. It is not an option to simply
reject the proposal, but rather if you have specific concerns then we need to
work with each other to address those concerns and come up with something
agreeable.

Hey all, I'm boosting this email with a new subject line so that it's
clear to readers - this contains an important new proposal!!!
Brief summary: this proposal forms a congress of BIPOC and non-men
from all Omni's groups, who then elect a small committee which has its
own seat on the board, its own delegate, and a few specific powers
related to addressing racism and sexism. This is an important step
towards making omni representative and accountable! This finally
begins to put our Statement of Solidarity into action!

I added a little note at the beginning on our proposal and the events
from 2 weeks ago. Happy to provide a short statement. In general, I
appreciate the apologies made and think this can be a growing
opportunity to forge a stronger collective. If it's possible, we can
open discussion on the proposal this week if enough delegates have had
a chance to review with the idea of approving at the next delegate
meeting (or worst case, the one after).
As mentioned earlier, we are proposing the creation of a safe space
Committee (see attached). We appreciate and accept all
feedback/comments/concerns.
In struggle,
Rafiq

Hi Sudoers,
As you may have heard, we're building a Makerspace at the Sun Gallery in Hayward.
We are getting ready to purchase supplies for the space, but before we do so, we'd like to ask you if you happen to have any items on our list that you no longer need and would like to donate! In that way we can save some money to invest in things that we can't get donated.
It was suggested that we come visit Sudo Room and take a look. So a few of us plan to take a visit there tonight during Hardware Hacking. The idea is to sort some of your excess supplies, and place them in a pile with a note saying that we plan to take these items with us unless you want to keep them, in order to give people at Sudo Room a chance to take any items back that they wish to keep. Then we come back at a later date to pick them up. Sounds good?
Here are some items we're interested in:
- Electronics & Robotics: Multimeters, heat guns, power supplies, wire cutters, crimpers, wires and cables of various kinds, adapters, electrical parts (resisters, LEDs, diodes, etc.), motors, sensors, servos, Arduinos, microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, robotics parts, soldering irons & solder, etc.
- Mechanical & Power Tools: screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches, sockets, clamps, pliers, rulers, calipers, box cutters, hack saws, wood saws, drills, bits, dremel tools, etc.
- Textile Tools: Sewing machines, fabric scissors, needles, pins, quilting tools, fabric, thread etc.
- General: Tool cabinets, toolboxes, power strips, power extension cords.
- 3D Printers, working laptops (under 10 years old), computer monitors (with HDMI), 50" HDTV, milling/CNC machine, video projector, VR headsets.
Please email us at haywardtechies(a)gmail.com with descriptions and any photos of items you'd like to donate.
The Sun Gallery Makerspace meets every Saturday at 12 noon at 1015 E Street, Hayward, CA.
SAVE THE DATE:
Makerspace Grand Opening and Art Meets Tech exhibit on Saturday August 12th 1pm.
Thank You,
-Carl
yes this is great news for Sudo
But Omni Commons in general is not doing so well. As you may have noticed if
you read the delegates meeting notes, we are due for a tax payment by the end
of this month, of $60,400. And we don't really have that much, although we
are going to be able to get the check to clear by creative shuffling of
various accounts.
if we don't pay the PG&e bill, we don't lose the building. if we don't pay the
water bill, even if the water gets turned off we don't lose the building. But
if we don't pay the tax bill, we can lose the building. so we are prioritizing
that.
sudoroom pays omni Commons $2,000 each month in rent. we are on time with
that, but Omni Commons in general needs more money. The GoFundMe is still
active, and is a great way to contribute extra money that's burning a hole in
your pocket.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-the-omni
We also need volunteers to join the finance team specifically to help find a
new lender for the building, since the mortgage we have right now is balooning
in December. We are also always looking for people to find and apply for
grants to keep the whole operation going. Shit we struggle to have enough
people on the finance team to collect rent from all the tenants/collectives.

Hi Tom and cc: Sudoers:
Thanks for for organizing this. I'm still hoping that FUSD will unlock
the Chromebooks so check occasionally as you process them to make sure
they're still locked.
Also see:
USPIRG’s petition to extend the life of Chromebooks:

For more background see “Chromebook Churn”:

as general purpose computing devices:

Maybe we can launch a broader "Keep 'Dem Chromebooks" public good
program at Sudoroom and get a bunch of Linux-enhanced Chromebooks in
circulation in the community to improve digital literacy, digital
equity, and digital inclusion?
Cheers, -Peter

This Sunday 21 May 2023 from 11am to about 2pm at SudoRoom in Oakland.
SudoRoom is on Shattuck Ave between 51st and Telegraph
4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland, CA 94609
The entrance is on the corner of Shattuck and 48th

The project this time is converting chromebooks to Linux.
Peter Mui of Fixit Clinic was given a stack of EOL chromebooks from the
Fremont school district. Unfortunately they neglected to unlock them
first.
But I have found that the bios can be reflashed so you can boot a Linux
installer bypassing the Google check.
I had a thought of using a Pi to do the flash as PI gpio can do SPI. But
most of the
chromebooks have 1.8V bios chips while the PI has 3.3V gpio.
I probably have level shifters but I have recently dumped stuff unorganized
into
storage. So I will likely not find them in time.
For now I am using a USB programmer with an 1.8V adapter.
Yes I will also try to be online at
meet.jit.si/Pi.BerkeleyLUG This will be a conference room mic and speaker
in a
shared space so maybe some background noise.
Thomas
P.S. You may be interested: SudoRoom has a hardware hack night every
Tuesday from 7pm
Also It's a Fixit Clinic.

All men in this list, I’d like you to spread the word out about this night

flyers at Sudoroom and the link in the calendar has a good description of
it. Attendance has been a bit low lately so it’d be great if all can help!
