Work will be done by skilled paid contractors but finishes can be done by volunteer labor. Basic drawing of proposed rooms is included as attachment. Proposed By: Sarah Lockhart & David Keenan (Building WG / Safer DIY Spaces) Context: In order to successfully refinance the current balance of the mortgage loan, Omni needs to regularly generate an additional $6500 a month. Creating these desirable private/secure rooms could generate between $1000 - $2000 a month, depending on how much we choose to charge for these spaces. This would reduce the pressure on requiring this $6500/month to be generated solely by events. In the view of banks and lenders, income from long-term tenants is more reliable than income from a volunteer-run events space. Rationale: In the past month, Omni has advertised via social media having space available for new member collectives and groups. We have fielded inquiries from many interested groups for having long-term space at Omni. Almost all of them expressed a desire for having a secure space (i.e. a room with a door that can lock). Omni currently only has 3 such spaces available that are not adjacent to the ballroom. The rooms adjacent to the ballroom would be more productively used in the service of event production. While Omni has historically wanted to maximize commoning of resources and having open shared spaces, the current needs of potential new member collectives and tenants are not fully aligned with that vision. They are amenable to some shared space, but they tend to want some space that is “theirs”. In order to keep the building, we believe it would be better to “build-to-suit” in the near term, while still retaining the common spaces that are currently being used in the original spirit. The areas we are proposing to build new rooms are currently common spaces that are not being used or are being significantly under-utilized. Details: New Mezzanine room: This room is something we had favorably discussed building for the PLP when they were looking for new space. We would build one wall with a door across the area that is currently storing the library books and shelving. We would also install operable plexiglass windows, so that the occupant of this room can have more sonic privacy or get greater airflow from the entrance hall. This room would be approximately 500 sq ft, and would “rent” for between $600/month (which would be a very generous rate) to upwards of $1500/month, while still being below market rate. Estimated cost: $3000 – the majority would relate to the materials and labor for installing the windows. New Basement room: This room would be 400 sq ft., twice as large as the existing basement offices. It would be built abutting the former FYE space and the rear of the space would be the south wall of the basement. We would only need to build two walls and install a door. We would likely have to install minimal electrical outlets, as the room would have use of the outlets installed last summer. We may need to install electrical outlets along the west wall of the basement to provide convenient power to the sewing area, which would be relocated there, between the door to go upstairs to Sudo Room and the storage area for The Free Store. When evaluating the space at Omni for potential enclosure, we focused on areas of the building that were currently unused / under-utilized. The existing “media lab” was one of those spaces, apart from the sewing area. The rest of the media lab would be dismantled. Omni members and collectives would have first “dibs” on items they want to relocate to their spaces. Any remaining supplies, furniture, and equipment would be donated to local schools, arts education programs, other community groups, or the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse down the street whose mission is supplying the community with donated arts and crafts supplies. Estimated cost: $4000 - labor and material for building two walls (including drywall), installing a door that locks, and some electrical work.

Proposal: Should we adopt a code of conduct and statement of intent?

Should we establish a statement of purpose and a code of conduct? I think Sudoroom should adopt a code of conduct, because currently our only behavioral rules are the Omni Commons Safer Space policy: https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Safer_Space_Policy These rules are vital, but are limited to a broad set of wildy unacceptable behavior anywhere. They don't outline minor and hackerspace specific guidelines on ideal and discouraged behavior. PB asked if we have any statement defining our most basic principle or goal, and while it sounds like there is a lot of diverse informal wisdom, there isn't a clear singular statement of intent. So I'd like to propose we agree on one of those as well. I think a starting point for a code of conduct would be something like "Try to enhance the experience of others in Sudoroom and avoid impeding it", and then we could go into a few more specific examples like cleaning up, asking people if they'd like companionship or space when working in the space at the same time, etc. I don't have any clear suggestions for what our statement of purpose would be, but I like the values of justice and openness. Ideas for the SudoRoom blog / twitter account - historical threads on the history of computing!

This is a cool history twitter post by this cool dude, i think he founded npm or something? But he doesn’t always tweet about just computers and programming, he does a lot of broad history tweets https://twitter.com/seldo/status/1512970436669173763?s=21&t=wZYbqR3J2g0mBL1… There is a cool long twitter thread on Ada Lovelace here… his insights a re pretty cool! I’m wondering if we can spin stuff like t hat off on the SudoRoom blog. Recently I visited SudoRoom and people were showing me an early laser - I think it was remarkable in t hat it could project blue laser light? Then they told me that it wasn’t until 2008 that blue lasers were possible? Some dude won the Nobel prize for this? This would be a cool thread, just SudoRoom rambling about the history of some invention in some interesting way. I’m sure we’re writing it in the SudoRoom voice because SudoRoom comes from a particular point of view which is that it’s all about social good but also invention and discovery for its own sake. Get ready for the East Bay Bike party tomorrow! everyone should come! 12th street 730pm! Thanks to everyone who's given me suggestions, inspired me and taught me about laser projections. And of course everyone who's encouraged me! I've gotten so much help. My focus the past few weeks at both sudoroom and noisebridge have been the the light projection art projects - https://sudoroom.org/wiki/ProjectionMapping <https://sudoroom.org/wiki/ProjectionMapping> That being said, after exploring many avenues, I'm going to film and test run my first light projection mapping on a bike at the tomorrow's bike party. So for the first time in a few years I'll actually fully flesh out an idea at SudoRoom instead of leaving 100% of everything half-finnished =D Thanks for the ideas maarc! at the moment i'm able to mount small laser projectors on my bike, and based on ideas from marc, I'm going to use my phone's accelerometer for now to project stuff on the ground. Let's see how this goes! I bet there's even some math involved here. Definitely a good way to revive my old trigonometry skills =D I'll try to do a writeup in a charming way so we can post this on the blog. For a lot of the time I spent after work at SudoRoom it was all about the creativity exploration and fun. Let's see what comes next! I'm finding that the smaller laser proejctors are obviously more dynamic, just less hassle to set up than the larger projectors. I'm allergic to attending large events, but I'm still interested in making something "large".... in the ballroom at some point. There are so many immersive environments ... Thank you very much for sending out these emails reminding us who's waiting for endorsement of their membership application. This is a crucial move in our incomplete process, and will help us not lose potential members! I wanted to do something like that but it was too many steps for me and I got overwhelmed. I'm really grateful for you doing it. I noticed that all your emails sent to the discuss list are addressed as: ruin mechanic via sudo-discuss <sudo-discuss(a)sudoroom.org> "ruin mechanic" is a friend of mine (helped make the Jitsi terminal custom software, he's a GREAT teacher and very talented coder who unfortunatly rarely comes to the space) and I guess you copied the address from a message he had written.
