This summer MBA achieved its longtime goal of taking a group of youth on an overnight residential meditation retreat. Participants were recruited from our longtime partner the METAS program, a tutoring program for youth in the Richmond, CA area. Ten youth and young adults (ages 14-20) participated in this 3-day, 2-night retreat, and it was a triumph! Our retreat took place at Redwood Glen, a beautiful retreat center nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains with breathtaking views and hundred year-old redwood trees. The youth who took part in this retreat were amazing! We took them through mindfulness meditation exercises, deep sharing activities, long periods of silence, and advanced compassion practices. We hiked around the woods and meditated in the forest, by a beautiful stream, and discussed life at night by the campfire. Upon its completion, every young person who participated in the retreat was interviewed about the experience was like. Without exception they described how beneficial they felt the retreat was, mostly citing reductions in stress, contemplation about life, and an increased emotional awareness. Most of the youth said they would like to repeat the experience next year, and would even like to extend it to a five or six-day retreat. MBA would like to thank its generous supporters and partners who made this retreat happen. Our first retreat was so successful that MBA is in the process of planning one - two retreats for Summer, 2014. We need your help! Our youth come from low-income neighborhoods, contending with issues of violence, substance abuse, and trauma. MBA does not charge any fees to the youth we serve or their families for any of our programming or retreats. We rely on support from wonderful people like you who want to spread mindfulness and give young people the opportunity to learn more about themselves and gain skills not only applicable, but critical, to their lives in the real world. Bioinformatics meeting - 7pm Sunday 11th August

Dear All, I just wanted to announce the second Bio-informatics class at Sudo room, all Sudo'ers interested in getting a deeper understanding of bio-informatics are welcome to attend. After the last successful Bio-informatics class with 21 attendees, Ron's very kindly offered to volunteer again to help teach aspiring digital biohackers the tricks of the trade :) Just as a side note, Oakland nights live is currently booking a slot on Sunday but the text on the booking says that it's on Saturday, so I'm assuming that it was an incorrect booking date. Where is the ladder?

We had a wonderful ladder. It was tall, safe, had two sturdy feet. It said Rachel in blue marker all over it, because it belongs to a sudoer who let us use it for a long time. It is now missing, just when we need it for space cleaning. Did any of you take it? Does any of you know where it might be? If this got stolen we will be sad.

brain hacking on hawking

Hey all- My name is Steve and was involved in several Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) hacks on McHawking, the wheelchair robot, back when it lived at Noisebridge: http://www.instructables.com/id/Brain-Controlled-Wheelchair/ <http://www.instructables.com/id/Brain-Controlled-Wheelchair/> About 3-4 of us are banding together over the next several days to revisit and extend that work. Jake gave a heads up as to its new location and we're all looking forward to visiting the space (for most if not all of us it will be our first time there). I wanted to reach out and make sure we're going about this the right way, and of course invite anyone else who interested in either robotics or BCI to join us and get involved. We look to published whatever we do as open source and will try to update the Sudo Room wiki (as my quick search and review of the mailing list archives only turned up last month's introduction). We're still firming up timing but will probably drop by tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon and play Monday and Tuesday by ear. Feel free to message me on or off list if anyone is keen. Cheers! Steve

Cool Mold! [Pictures]

Hey Sudoroom: I made pickles this week and some fancy-looking mold grew on them. Not good for eating, but a treat for watching, so I thought you'd all like to see!
