Hello, A group of people are getting together at Sudo Room Tuesday evening at 7:30 to talk about David Bollier's work on the commons and I wanted to see if anyone from the Sudo Room community wanted to join us. David Bollier is one of the leading common advocates in the US, and believes the language of the commons will allow us to think our way out of the market/state argument that currently consumes most of what passes as political debate in this country. This is part of an ongoing discussion group we've put together to talk about some of the intellectuals and activists, including Bollier himself, who are coming to Oakland in early August for a conference. We need a new language that does not insidiously replicate the misleading fictions of the old order – for example, that market growth will eventually solve our social ills or that regulation will curb the world’s proliferating ecological harms. We need a new discourse and new social practices that assert a new grand narrative, a different constellation of operating principles and a more effective order of governance. Seeking a discourse of this sort is not a fanciful whim. It is an absolute necessity. And, in fact, there is no other way to bring about a new order. Words actually shape the world. Next Friday: First Monthly POSSE Party (hosted by BACE Timebank!)

Hi all! I'm excited to announce a new monthly event that will be held on Third Fridays at sudo room: POSSE [Potluck Orientation Skill-share Swap-meet Event) Parties! Bring some food to share and meet local visionaries creating a more cooperative economy through alternative currencies such as timebanking, skill-share and resource-exchange circles. This is a family-friendly event, and childcare will be provided. Thinking this is also a great way to make one of our weekly 'Hacker Happy Hours' more family-friendly and health-oriented (though of course, no beverage turned away!). I'll be printing fliers at sudo today and will leave some on the main table. It would be great if folks could help with outreach, so grab a few fliers and post them up at your coffeeshop / community center / library / public space of choice! large garage sale this Saturday

Hi all, If anyone is interested in a kick-ass garage sale this Saturday, come check out Central Self Storage in Alameda: http://www.centralselfstorage.com/p/self_storage/directions/alameda-ca-9450… This place is walking distance from our 84-unit apartment building that will be closing down next month, so I expect there will be way more great stuff for sale than usual. Carla and I will be there all day (8am-3pm), trying to get rid of some really nice pieces, including some Indonesian and African carvings, various statues, large glass bottle vases, some furniture, etc. In other words - Come buy some of our crap, so we don't have to move it! Synthego - Synthetic Biology start up raised $8M series A and looking to hire software, mechanical + hardware engineers

Borrowing sudo bike

one or two day inventory + clear out of sudo room: scheduling request

Lockers are acquired! There are 5 units with 2 lockers each. Each of these 10 lockers has a small square shelf and a tall L-shaped shelf. It turns out these don't need built-in locks, they just have loops to put a padlock through. So folks should probably acquire their own padlocks. How much should we charge for them? I was thinking we could charge a flat rate per locker, and we can share them for discount rates. Who'd like to share with me? :) The ad asked for $50 but the guy dropped it to 40 when he learned what they are for. Instead of reimbursing me, I'll just let it go towards my locker tab. Although membership is of course sliding scale, we should make it clear that locker dues aren't meant to be a substitute for member dues or a new form of special membership. It's just another fundraiser. So everybody pay up, help us cut down on clutter, and enjoy your new lockers!
