Hi Mitch,
I’m Chi-Lan and I work with WIP! If you recall last year, I reached out to you last year regarding free passes and Maker packs for IDF14. Again this year, we have free one-day passes (and discounted full passes) for the event, and I'd like to invite you and your group to come to IDF. Can you send this offer out to your mailing list?
Like last year, we’re helping our friends at Intel with the MakerSpace at IDF15 San Francisco from Aug 18-20. The Maker Space will be an interactive place within IDF that has demos, hands-on activities and challenges, and you can win prizes and giveaways! You’ll get to build things using Intel tech and tools, play with gadgets and toys, and walk out of the Maker Space with something you’ve created! Here’s a video from the Maker Space last year at IDF14: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fUB2PD6wLI&mc_cid=1ec0593630&mc_eid=18a3f7…
We have some cool offers for you:- free one-day passes to enjoy with our code CPDSSG10- a discounted full conference pass for $695 with our code BUBSSG10
You can register for these passes at http://idfregistration.com.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at chilan(a)wip.org. Hope to see you at the Maker Space this year!
Thanks,Chi-Lan

If anyone is interested in any more outreach do tell! For me the huge
advantage SudoROom has are the hours, the people, the punk rock mentality
and... the late hours!

Dear Sudo Room,
Here is the invoice for Sudo Room's shared expenses at the Omni in July 2015. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.
The Omni is in a tight financial situation right now, so please pay your invoice before August 1 if possible.
Thanks so much,
Sarah + Finances WG

Dear Sudo Room,
It is amgo. To help clear up the epaper trail, I changed your April rent invoice to reflect all the internet payments you have paid on behalf of Omni minus the one month of wifi payment each collective owes. Sudo paid $1080 for eight months of wifi. $2000 rent - $1080 for past wifi payments = $920 RENT
On top of that you owe $135 for your share of WiFi. This brings the total to $1055.
Your accidental payment of $870.73 on March 2nd is subtracted from that total so that now you owe $184.27.
You emailed Finance WG explaining it this way:
Matt accidentally deposited $870.73 on March 2nd that should be detracted from rent.
*** Internet was $135/month, from July-February (8 months) = $1080, minus sudo's share (1/8) = $135. $1080 - $135 = $945
*** $870.73 + $945 = $1815.73
*** $2000 rent - $1815.73 = $184.27 rent for April
You can think of it in whichever way is clearest for you. I am doing it this way to make it clear on the books.
Thanks so much for covering the wifi and being a rad collective and prompt rent payers.
xoxo

Dear Omni Financiers,
I just sent you all invoices for monthly expenses and June rent at the
Omni. Please let me know if you did not receive your invoices.
For your reference, here is a breakdown of the shared expenses in May:
*Utilities:*
- PG&E: $587.23
- EBMUD: $478.60
- WM: $140.36
*Taxes & Insurance:*
- Building insurance: $661.00
- Property taxes: $797.28
- Business tax: $181.35
Starting this month, the shared expenses are calculated by subtracting $100
for Optikallusions' contribution and then dividing utilities by 7 member
collectives and 1 tenant. The taxes and insurance are split evenly between
the 7 member collectives.
Let me know if you have questions about any of this. Otherwise, please pay
your invoices as soon as possible.
As always, if you know you will be late paying your rent and/or shared
expenses, please let the Finances Working Group know so we can plan
accordingly.
THANK$$,

[spaghettinight] sys-admin job
from: Boris Fain boris.fain at gmail.com
Hi all -
If anyone wants to pick up a little extra cash, I'm posting this position.
If you have run and installed Linux yourself you are 1/2 way to the
skill-set and we can train you for the rest. It's a flex gig very chill for
the right person.
Linux systems administrator, part time:
InterX inc is looking for a part-time sys-admin. The continuous duties are
fairly light, with periods of occasional burst activity (upgrades, etc.).
You will be responsible for a small (300 cores) HPC cluster, and occasional
EC2 spillover. You will also occasionally interact with vendors. User
complains are fairly light, but are expected to be addressed within 48
hours. As there's on-site activity local candidate is preferred though much
of the work can be done remotely.
Relevant skills:
Fluency with Linux and cluster configurations. Rocks Clusters experience
desired. EC2 and StarCluster experience a plus. Fluency in basic scripting,
system maintenance and backup strategy a must.
This is probably best suited for a graduate student who wants to make some
money on the side.

Reda, the Pirate Party member of the European Parliament, prepared an
extensive report recommending a number of reforms, including liberal
licensing of government works, measures to safeguard the public domain,
a harmonisation of copyright term length across the EU, explicit
allowances for linking, parody, quotation and data-mining, and limits to
legal restrictions on bypassing DRM. This month the Parliament voted to
accept the report, with some amendments.
Julia Reda will be at this month's San Francisco TA3M to talk about her

Friends,
There have been some issues over the last few days with people disrupting
the space, that it has become necessary to restate the access policy of the
Omni.
During the hours that La Commune is open (Tue-Sun 12-6pm) the bookstore is
open to the public. Outside of those hours, the Omni is NOT open to the
public and the door is to always be shut closed, not latched open. During
those closed hours, the Omni is open to members of collectives, or to their
guests who must be accompanied by members at all times. During events,
such as BAPS classes, the point person for the event is responsible for all
the participants who are not members.
Other volunteers are working on door access tomorrow at noon if anyone
wants to help make the building more conducive to having a safe
environment.
Love,
Julio
if sudoroom wants the omni to continue to exist, we will need to all get
on-board to keep this boat afloat.

Subject: [omni-consensus] !! Financial announcement !!
Hi friends,I'm stuck at work and probably won't make it to the delegate's meeting tonight, but I wanted to make an announcement about the Omni's
finances.
As many of you know, the Omni has been running a monthly deficit of about $8,000 - $9,000 every month. We've been able to make up for that by dipping
into the funds raised in December through the Indiegogo campaign, but those funds are running out quickly.
We currently only have enough $$ in the bank to cover two months of rent and expenses. Member collectives can do your part by paying invoices on time
(and even early if you're able!) for the next few months. If your collective has outstanding invoices for rent and shared expenses, this would be a great
time to appeal to your members for extra support so you can pay any $$ still owed to the Omni.
The finances working group has been updating our Quickbooks and will soon be able to present more detailed and thrilling financial reports so everyone
will have a clearer picture of where the Omni's money is coming from and how it's being spent.
Better data = more lucid decisions.
Let me know if you have any questions about this. The next finances working group will be held on Wednesday, July 22 at 7 pm at the Omni. Come hang out
with us if you want to learn more about Omni $$$.

Hi again,
In addition to the outstanding rent invoice for April, please see the attached invoice for shared expenses at the Omni in April. It would be great if you're able to pay at least part of this invoice as soon as possible.
The Omni is in a precarious financial situation currently so I'm asking all member collectives to pay outstanding invoices if they're able.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks again,
Sarah

if you put a 1 ohm resistance, you will just blow up the resistor.
24 volts divided by 1 ohm = 24 amps
24 volts times 24 amps = 576 watts
you need to find the highest number of ohms that will still cause the
motor controller to not give you an error. Lets say you find that a 100
ohm resistor (in place of the missing motor) causes the controller to be
OK. When you move the joystick, and it tries to turn the fake motor, it
will give it up to 24volts. But it's a 100 ohm resistor.
24v / 100 ohm = 0.24 amps
24v * 0.25 amps = 5.76 watts
if it works with a 100 ohm, you should use that. 5.76 watts is
reasonable. 576 watts is most of a horsepower and is not reasonable.
5
in case you're not confused i'll tell you this: the power a motor
consumes (from a fixed voltage source for example) depends on the amount
of force it's putting out.
So if you have a motor just spinning a wheel in the air it doesn't take as
much power as if you're making it grind grain, or push a fat person up a
steep incline. The ohms you measure when you use a multimeter on the
stopped motor correspond to its MAXIMUM power, basically.
so if you stopped the motor and applied 24v, 576 watts would flow through
it and heat it up pretty fast. But if you let it spin freely in the air,
its effective impedance would be much higher than 1 ohm!
as for how to isolate the motors for different jobs.. we can read the
manual on the control box and adjust the settings, or just hook up the
computer control and let it do all the work. I don't know though.

To: "discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org" <discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org>
Friends,
*There are 3 important meetings coming up in July that we need people who
support the Omni to attend**.*
On Thursday 7/16, at the regular delegates meeting, several proposals
will be discussed along with
information about David Keenan's sabbatical from the Omni.
On Thursday 7/23 at 7pm we will meet to update the community about
progress being made towards buying the building. Options for how to
structure the purchase and ownership will be presented and discussed.
Thursday 7/30 we will be holding our official Annual Board meeting as
required by our bylaws. New officers (President, Treasurer/CFO,
Secretary) will be selected. Currently Lara Durback is willing to be
President, Sarah Pritchard has agreed to be Treasurer, and Jenny Ryan
is willing to continue as Secretary. If you have an interest in
serving in any of these roles, let us know. Also, per our bylaws,
*each member collective must officially designate a delegate** at the
annual meeting. **Each collective should choose a delegate according
to its own internal process before th**e meeting.
Please forward this email to your collectives so we can have as much
participation as possible.
*Thanks,
<3

Hi all,
There's a cool event based in Uganda, but designed for remote
participation, this weekend.
"Outernet" is a project to repurpose satellites to "broadcast" free
information, that can be picked up by inexpensive receivers, for free, and
then reshared for free over local networks/WiFi. A way to get information
to remote and underserved parts of the world. It's one-way communication,
so certainly not a replacement for the Internet or a total solution to the
Digital Divide -- but a very cool project nonetheless. They are also
developing democratic processes for deciding what content to share.
They are having an edit-a-thon this weekend. I thought Sudo folks might be
interested. Keep in mind, this is 10am to 10pm Uganda time -- which
midnight to noon Saturday Pacific (I think it's the same hours Sunday, need
to confirm).

And see their blog post:

Aw it's ok, I wasn't upset. Glad that he is returning to life in some
form, actually. :)
Hey all, I'm trying to build a winch for the 14' projection screen that
going up over the ballroom stage out of a wheelchair motor assembly. Per
Jake's suggestion, I hacked 2 server PSUs to get 24v@14a but the controller
is not working and the error code says the right wheel/motor is missing/not
engaged. Anyone know what I am missing? Do I need to jump something to get
the controller to engage while it is "incomplete"?
Thank you,

Hi there,
Checking in about payment for Sudo Room's rent in April (see attached invoice). I apologize for not being totally in the loop on this, but it's my impression that the Omni agreed to give Sudo a $135.00 rebate on your April rent as reimbursement for paying the Omni's wifi. Is that correct?
If so, please see the outstanding balance on your invoice for April 2015 rent and process payment as soon as you're able. Otherwise, please let me know if any of this is incorrect so I can update your invoice accordingly.
Thanks so much!
