At tonight's weekly Sudoroom meeting, we had a long conversation
brainstorming new ways to arrange the space. A lot of it hinges on
uncertainty about the robot arm. A while back we agreed it would move
against the west wall, but it hasn't happened yet. What are the
current plans for the robot? What needs to happen for it to move? How
can people help? Thanks!
Hi friends,
So here at the meeting we're brainstorming about ways to bring more
people in to the space, both to be more inviting and receptive to the
needs of our community and to help bring more support to Sudoroom.
Towards that end, how about everyone who runs a group at the space make
an extra effort to reach out to others who might be interested in
joining your group or learning what you know? Try it this week!
It could mean doing a basic websearch and finding out if there are other
community groups that are interested in these issues or would benefit
from learning what you all know.
For example, with the cryptoparty, I'm excited to contact to some of the
activist groups that are organizing visible protests in Oakland and
would benefit from skills shared at a cryptoparty.. If you work on
robots, maybe reach out to some of the many robotics groups in the Bay
Area. Just send an email to let them know when and where; maybe they'll
show up :)
Let me know if you're interested in doing outreach, but don't know where
to start or who to invite. I'd be delighted to help.

A PARCEL CONTAINING 16 POUNDS OF NFC RFID WRISTBANDS WAS SHIPPED TO THE
OMNI A WEEK OR TWO AGO. IT WAS ADDRESSED TO NIC WEIDINGER BUT IS INTENDED
FOR SUDOROOM HACKING.
I HAVE NOT SEEN IT NOR HEARD MENTION OF IT, SO I AM GUESSING IT IS SITTING
IN THE OMNI NEAR THE FRONT DOOR SOMEWHERE SINCE NOBODY KNEW WHERE TO PUT
IT. IF YOU FIND IT, OR HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF IT, PLEASE WRITE BACK.
<S>THESE RFID TAGS WILL BE USED FOR PERMANENTLY IDENTIFYING COLLECTIVE
MEMBERS AND WILL BE NECESSARY TO OPEN DOORS AND BATHROOM STALLS. YOUR
RFID WRISTBAND WILL BE LINKED TO YOUR WIKI PAGE AND PRIVILEGE KEYBASE.</S>
THESE RFID TAGS WILL BE FOR ALL KINDS OF FUN EXPERIMENTATION AND GENERAL
RFID HACKING, AND CAN BE READ BY MOST MODERN PHONES. THEY HAVE
USER-WRITABLE DATA SPACE IN THEM AND THE POSSIBLITIES ARE LIMITLESS.
WHERE ARE THEY?

P.S. TODAY IS CAPS-LOCK DAY.
Hello,
David and Alice have found a way to get us a free replacement compressor for the walk-in freezer at omni. But the way involves manual labor and we need your help. We have to help remove the replacement compressor and the entire walk-in that it is currently attached to from a bar in San Francisco. David, Joe, and I helped Alice with it today. It will require at least 4 more hours of work. If you are available to help tomorrow (the 23rd), please let us know. Sorry this is so last minute, but we do need your help.
Thanks,
Ben

we got the embroidery machine working!!! it's totally awesome.
tl;dr we need needles! who will order this ebay item?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/25-MEISTERGRAM-INDUSTRIAL-EMBROIDERY-MACHINE-NEEDLE…
it takes a little coordination though, because it's an industrial sewing
machine with a clutch pedal to engage the motor - and it's very powerful.
So it will sew very rapidly and you have to steer the needle around the
pattern at a rate matching the sewing rate.
it's kindof like driving a ferrari in that way.
anyway, it came with a single needle and it is broken now. We need more
needles!!! we have plenty of everything else.
it uses weird needles - they are the normal length (1.5") but their upper
shank is 1/16" diameter which is smaller than standard sewing machine
needles.
http://www.sewingmantra.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/sewing-machine-needl…
the machine is a Meistergram model M'100 and it uses the same needles as
the M700 / M800 like the ones in the ebay item are for.
if you order these needles, write to the list so we don't end up with 50,
although i'm sure we'll need them if we use it enough.

Dana and I have a grand idea for setting up easily programmable LED
displays at Noisebridge in a massive matrix. What we need are donations of
panels, which will be purchased and shipped by Mitch on his China trip. See
our nicely organized wiki page for details, source code, and more info.
https://noisebridge.net/wiki/LED
It still reflects the old address.
Thanks, cheers, and HAX THE PLANET!!!

P.S. Also plan on syncing to work on the eeg in the near future. :D
Our inventory tracking system is now up and running again!
Go to:
http://stuff.sudo
Create labels by filling out the form and hitting "save and print"
(remember to look at the preview of the label before printing, you have to
manually hit enter in the description textbox to create newlines).
Stick the label on the item, and you can either scan the QR code to go to
the item's wiki page, or look at the ID on the printed label and for e.g.
ID 42, go to:
http://o.sudoroom.org/42
When you print a label it will come out of the label printer next the the
wooden 3D printer. If it doesn't work, ensure that the label printer is on
(it should have a green light) and connected.
The software has been updated to the latest codebase so it should crash
less and will automatically restart if it does crash.
The code is here:
https://github.com/sudoroom/labitrack
Unfortunately (or fortunately) our old database was lost in the mists of
moving (or maybe it wasn't but I couldn't find it) but the wiki pages
remain, so it should be easy enough to create redirects.

I want to just reiterate this in light of the past few days of
conversation. I have heard a lot of different narratives about what
happened with Backspace over the past few months. I don't claim to
know exactly what happened anymore, but it seems to boil down to a
huge string of communication failures that resulted in Backspace
paying for space to operate, yet having no space until now.
At Thursday's meeting, the subject of past-due utility bills came up,
but it seems apropos to mention that lots of Omni groups have not paid
utility bills, or even rent, and one of the amazing potential things
about Omni is our capacity to be a non-evil landlord - each according
to their ability and their need.
It's clear that most backspace folks are WORKERS whose primary concern
is being able to see their clients and students and make a living
wage. It's also clear to me that the primary benefit of having
Backspace at Omni is NOT the money they'd bring in, but the new
people, energy and perspectives. It would REALLY SUCK if we lost all
that by fighting with them over money.
Other than money, the only other concern I'm hearing about this
proposal is about space. While I have expressed concerns about
"enclosure" in the past, Backspace's plans for the den or "storage
room" are NOT enclosures. They're stewardship of commons. This is
exactly the model I always dreamed of for our building!
Finally, there's BAPS. I think it might help to separate BAPS'
pragmatic need to host many evening classes from BAPS' position as a
roving "nomadic" group without dedicated space, and both from the
concept of "enclosure". Because it seems to me like Backspace's
pragmatic needs are similar to BAPS - to assemble in spaces and occupy
them for a finite period, for classes and 1-on-1 sessions. So what are
the ways we can frame this as a collaboration rather than a
competition?
I think these problems would get solved a lot faster if we were all
able to trust each other, the best path to building trust is for
Backspace to begin operating at the Omni ASAP, and the best way for
that to happen is to show support and forgiveness all around. Thanks.
A fellow named Dustin has been spending the last several days hanging out
all day in La Commune.
I talked to him today and explained that we're not yet open and that, while
he's here, he needs to either be vouched for by someone who is a member of
a member collective or attending an event or otherwise involved in work
related to the Omni.
I told him that I was leaving at 7pm and he'd need to find someone to vouch
for him at that time or else he'd have to leave. He said ok. I mentioned
this to him again around 7:15 and he said that someone at Sudo said he
could be in the building until 10pm. I told him that this was not the case,
and explained again our pre open to the public access policy. He walked
away from me saying "You're the only one who has said that to me." heading
back inside the building.
He said that "the guy with dreadlocks" told him he could hang out here. I
went and got Chris B and Mary from CCL and we approached him together.
Chris told him that he wasn't vouching for him and that he should leave.
Mary and I both told him that we'd be open to the public eventually but
that we just are not at the present moment. He left and said he wasn't
coming back.
Just sending this email so it's on the record. I'll try to add to the wiki,
as well.

Hmm. When I asked Sara for clarification, she said it was only one
dedicated locked room:
https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/consensus/2014/000105.html
I worry it might be harder to reach consensus if there is no potential
for the kids' room (storage1) to actually be a kids' room at any time
of the day.
Can the folks who brought the brown couch in and left it La Commune please
move it by Saturday? We are renting the ballroom for an event on Sunday and
they will be using the cafe to stage catering.
Additionally, La Commune is hoping to have the bookstore provisionally open
by November first. This would be a transitional period while we continue to
work on getting the cafe open.
If y'all could help us out by not leaving stuff in La Commune but rather
taking it to wherever its final destination w/in the Omni will be, that
would be tremendous.

I'm taking an extended break. Trying to do self-care better. Won't be
showing up every night like I have all year. Will still teach by
scheduled appointment. Thanks.
We received a notice from the State of California Franchise Tax Board,
notifying us that (since we have yet to submit or complete our 501(c)3
application) we must fill out state form 3500 to convince California not to
levy state taxes for last year, 2013.
I've filled out this form to the best of my knowledge so far, but it is
incomplete. It needs some more attention. See attached:
"state_tax_form_3500_sudo_room.pdf"
which should have saved my submitted values to many of the required fields.
We need a few things:
1. Review what I've already added (make sure dates and such are correct!)
2. Complete the rest of the form to the best of our ability
3. See if any lawyerly advice can help us ensure this goes smoothly
4. *Submit before Friday November 7* (30 days from October 9, 2014)
"Send us either your tax exempt letter, Form 3500, Form 3500A, or Form 100
with a copy of this letter within the next 30 days or we may issue a tax
assessment based on available information. A penalty of 25% of the
additional tax may be assessed for failure to provide information upon
written request."

Wait just to be clear, the Backspace proposal from last week wasn't
this. It was about dedicating ONE room, the eyeball room, and having
part-time scheduling priority in two common rooms, the den and
storage1. It didn't say anything about the disco room, which OMNIdance
has paid for exclusively until Dec 1, and which the Commons WG is
proposing to steward starting Dec 1. This Commons WG proposal was on
the pad at last week's meeting but the meeting went too long and the
delegates didn't have time to talk about it, sorry.

I love the bees and I think it would be an honor to be swarmed by them!
We hosted them at 2141 once, and now my house has one of their giant
murals. I think it would also be a great opportunity to buy some art
for the Omni's walls. :)
we have a bag of ultrasonic transducers, as seen here:
http://www.directindustry.com/prod/international-transducer/ultrasonic-tran…
in case you needed to do any ultrasonic transducing. there are also
electret microphones in the same bag, i think they were used together for
physical location tracking, like short distance high-accuracy distance
measurement.

Alice found some working free coolers on craigslist and she has dib on them. Does the omni want them? It's not on the wishlist.
Her home internet is out. She asked me to send a massage to the list asking for a few people to help move them Wednesday.
Her # is 4152720596. Can someone plese forward this to omni discuss?

Hey there!
Inés Chapela here with a problem regarding mailing list managing..I work
for the Greenhorns (check us out: www.thegreenhorns.net)
Anyway, we're trying to send out an e-blast to promote our latest project,
Up UP Farm Film Festival, which is a series of indie films and shorts that
explore the questions facing the new farmers movement.
We primarily use mailchimp for this type of thing and for some reason they
are saying we have "stale" emails and are threatening to delete our e list
unless we hire a third party company to clean up our list.
I'd love to just leave mailchimp and get another mailing list company that
doesn't cause so much trouble...Anybody have advice for a good route to
take here?
Any help greatly appreciated.
